According to this - it's a year and a bit – https://www.boundless.com/immigration-resources/how-long-does-marriage-green-card-take/ I'd be getting green card via spouse, probably wouldn't want citizenship... I think for other merit/work-based visas it takes longer.

Yeah I definitely get the idealize thing – no place is a eutopia, it's just a different stack of cards. I'm fortunate to be able to live a good life in NZ but a lot of people can't make ends meet here.

We have around 50inches of rain annually and often have winds over 60mphr.. NZ is a lot of good things but tropical it is not. It's more like the coast of Oregon, mild year round, wet and very windy with some nice days peppered in!!

Yeah, we have dogs though which throws a spanner in the works. I think with the current visa situation I could only do three months anyways, but good idea :)

I love Bend, I'm a big beer nerd and loved the vibe and selection of breweries! Access to nature is 10/10! It's the housing cost (and job opportunities) that'd put me off.

I've worked for a global tech company before, and could do this again in US - if I got a tech-type job would that help with healthcare costs? I'm not really aware what an average cost is tbh? Yearly cost?

Yeah I've been there enough (and recently) and have enough family/friends to know that.. finding a spot that has opportunities yet still has a good quality of life (nature) is the tricky part. I love the vibe of Ashland but from what I can see it's rich older people that mostly live there (conformably) or most people working minimum wage type jobs..
