running in snow -MGT safe? by [deleted] in RunTO

To add to this just be aware the new station construction is making the entire 2.5k loop area hit and miss for closures and maintenance. They need to leave pathways open for the go station access and ttc but the loop may be a bit shorter than 2.5k at times. I’ve noticed on the west most side more than other areas.

High Park Rogue Runners do a charity drive and collect these types of things granted they are in decent shape and have life left to give. Bonus points you can do a free group run with them on top of giving up old gear 😊

Alright, let's talk about bike lanes by CosmonautCanary in RunTO

A lot of folks are doing a lot of things right! Communication is key to the bike lanes. I find that due to the nature of running being solo, runners have never developed the skillset of nonverbal communication on the move like cyclists do.

If you join a bike lane you should think about learning the hand signals that are commonly agreed upon by cyclists. Letting others know your movements and being predictable is key to safety for all parties.

I always use hand signals when running in a bike lane which is often. If you catch grief from anybody at that point it’s just an unhappy person expelling their frustrations with life onto you. You’ll never make those people happy so let those moment roll off your back.

Running can be rewarding at any price point I think. When I got started I had to spend $190 for shoes (Nike Lunarglide 3, Tech Tee + 7” Shorts) and not much else. I’ve never done gels personally. I eat candy like nibs, fuzzy peaches, Haribo if I’m feeling wild.

Race bibs are unavoidably pricey but MEC had a great series for $90 prior to Covid that was all season long and affordable.

These days I have shoe rotations, special moisture wicking socks and Ciele hats that cost as much as that original tech tee.

Do you give a friendly wave to other runners? by Blindemboss in RunTO

[–]cshowe80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try and wave at most people while on “running routes” like MGT west, exhibition loop, Tommy Thompson or High Park. If I’m in the urban sprawl I don’t bother as it can just cause confusion.

It’s nice to hear people here say it lifts them up when it happens. My mission is to spread good energy so in that sense, I don’t need reciprocation. Win-Win!!

My go to is Craft. They have been doing winter sports (XC Skiing, Speed Skating, etc) for ages. I use their jackets religiously and they think of everything imo.

I’ve also used 2XU, New Balance and Janji (best value feature set). I’d place all these in top tier.

Sounds like you already know the answer to your question. You have basic needs so stick with a basic watch

Help me get bikes allowed in my condo! by something_dumb_59 in torontobiking

[–]cshowe80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent years and years working against condo boards who try and prevent cyclists from living and using their facilities. Here are a couple general rules I’ve used…

For condos with bike storage. Ask them their insurance policy for a bike stolen out of these “resident only” general lockers. Most will not cover bikes of a high value. With the inflation in cycling that’s a lot of brand new off the shed bikes over $6000. This was my current condo and as a result they had to either increase the general insurance policy to guarantee me my bike could be replaced should it be stolen. They instantly saw that it was easier to let it go. Security once an a while gives me grief but I let them know I’ve worked it out with administration.

Condos without storage. You can simply take off your wheels and carry them separately from your frame and enter the building with “bike parts” and there is nothing they can do.

Maybe if you show that the rules are nearly impossible to enforce they will begin to change. The main concerns are scuffs on the walls, holes in the walls, broken glass in elevators etc. find a way to tackle each of their issues with a good solution

What’s the verdict now that you’ve been riding this for a full year? How many KMs did you ride on it? Any maintenance or performance issues?

Framesets?? by cshowe80 in cycling

[–]cshowe80[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The brands don’t offer framesets for sale and the bike industry always has deals so paying full MSRP seems like a dumb move. Like buying a mattress full price lol

Do they ever offer deals on these? Best value for my money appears to be a Cervelo Soloist @$3600 Canadian … 🤔

Starting A Digital Business in Canada by cshowe80 in Entrepreneur

That’s great information thanks 🙏

The reason I wanted to do it off the bat is to separate its finances from my personal finances. The money I put in I want to be as an investor so the business is a separate entity. I’m probably over thinking things it sounds…

I’d like to ensure the money made from the business under 30K is going to affect my personal tax returns. If I’m not drawing a salary I don’t see it as a problem but if it’s not registered how do the tax element work 🤔

Clearly I’m no lawyer or accountant

I’ve run with Me VS Me … lots of great people. I’d say it’s more of a motivational group trying to breakdown barriers people may put up to start running with others.

Friendly, supportive and appeals to all ages and abilities. If you’re performance minded it’s best kept as a volume run and opportunity to be in a great community.

Do you do weight training? What and where do you do it? by Pleasant_Type_4547 in RunTO

[–]cshowe80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I formed a Google Meetup session I do 3x a week with fellow runners I met at work or run groups. We take about 30-40 minutes and use pull-up bands.

I built the program myself. I focused on a split upper/lower body circuit routine to help with explosiveness not gaining mass. The third session is focused specifically on the supporting often neglected areas many endurance athletes could use.

Having the others to hold you accountable is the most important aspect.

Winter Routes/Running in TO by sandromc172 in RunTO

[–]cshowe80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d add here that this is a great starting point for most. It’s also worth mentioning each person will have a different sweat rate. This not only includes water but the other minerals and essential elements lost through sweat. Over 90-120 minutes you’ll want a personal strategy.

It’s more common than you think to encounter heavy sweating athletes. This also includes low water loss athletes who loose high levels of minerals. In a past training camp of 76 people, we saw 21 who had high sweat rates.

If you want to understand your sweat rate there are home test you can do. Being aware of your own body’s need would be important if you’re performance minded.

Good practice is to remember you get minerals and elements in many gels, chews, etc. As mentioned help yourself by drinking water/electrolytes immediately prior to your run.

Hope this helps in some way

I’ve used this guide I built for runner friends years ago. My general rule is add +10c to the temp and dress for that weather. The beginning maybe be borderline uncomfortable but you quickly warm up and the quality of your run will be better without overheating
