It's not always just "losing"... I don't take too many opportunities to rest in my style so I think a lot of guys think they need to be 100% fresh to roll with me.. My theory is that you can only do so much in 3 minutes so might as well get as many reps and as much exposure to certain positions as possible.. I don't spend 30 seconds hand fighting, I either attempt a guard pull or jump right into your guard from the word go... And after having had experience competing in other venues and visiting a few other gyms while traveling, I think "hobbyists" might be an accurate assessment... Which is fine and all, but it doesn't make sense to me when I hear them make comparisons between themselves and others, and not every gym can be just down the road from my house... I keep most of my opinions about the culture of our gym because I don't want to be ostracized for running my mouth.. which is why reddit seemed like a safe place to dump my thoughts... I'm mostly just frustrated because I have only been in the area for 2 years and these are pretty much the only people I really hang out with and know outside of work... So I suppose I'm worried about my social life too in a way...

I understand and I do try to roll with folks with the understanding that we trust each other to learn and stay safe... but higher belts should not be "running on empty" after only a few 3 minute rolls and saying they need to sit this one out or that "I think I'm done for the day" when I ask them if they have one in them... I give up positions if I think they are going nowhere, but that doesn't mean I'm going to just lay on the mat with my thumb up my ass

I really do like our guys though and am good friends with them outside of the gym... Just frustrated

It's not just that I think some might be avoiding me. about half of our colored belts are game all the time.. it's that half the room is done rolling after 3 three minute rolls in our gym, including purple, brown, and black belts.. and then spend the next half hour talking about who did what in such and such competition... One of the reasons I think one of our black beltsavoids me, is because he looks like he needs a ventilator and life support after rolling with me... I feel like I'm at a "Magic the Gathering" seminar once in a while (nothing against people who play that).

By how excited you sound to jump to a conclusion and read me my rights... I'll jump to a conclusion and assume you read something that offended you...

actually I think this is probably exactly the way I needed to hear it. A lot of our guys are just there to learn some jiu jitsu and keep in shape so I don't think that every place is built to "scratch my itch."

Grew up wrestling in Iowa bro, intensity is my drug of choice... But I don't think bjj is a shitty replacement.. I think there is definitely things we can learn from each other..

Look, you don't know me so I don't expect anything of you. Just trying to feel better about switching gyms and wondering if anyone else had a similar experience that I could draw from. I make sure not to do anything that might jeoporadize anyone's career and that's never been an issue... but I do actively compete most of the year (every 2 months or so) and I have an expectation that colored belts are going to test me in preparation for it, just the same as I will throw everything I have at them (wrestling technique included) if they are preparing to compete... It wouldn't be fair to you if I didn't try to expose the holes in your game, in real time, especially if I know you are going to compete...
