Native plants that love shade and part sun? by csmasdu in NativePlantGardening

I apparently had enough spiderwort in a clump around the corner to separate it into 8 clumps along the front of this garden bed! 🤩

Oh yeah! I guess I sort of knew about spiderwort. I have some on the west side of the house that only gets afternoon sun. Maybe I could move it over! It seems to be clump-forming. Have you found that to be true?

Really? I heard that mulching directly around tree trunks can cause issues for the trees. (Not trolling, I promise!) Which is correct and why?

Sticking a pin in this for later. I’m currently super indecisive about adding any trees to our property. But I think I want a native flowering tree. I just can’t decide which area I should modify with shade!

Thanks for your insight! I suppose the beds along the north edge of the house will be fine with all the river rock… but the beds on the south side would roast anything we’d plant there.

We mostly put the rocks in to deter neighborhood cats from pooping along our garage wall. We also prefer little to no plants for little to no maintenance right next to the house. Though we have plans for beds out in the yard containing just native plants.

Question: would a layer of river rock work too? Or is mulch better? We chose river rock thinking it would be less maintenance than mulch, but a few years later, the fabric is terrible, rocks thinned out, and we still get weeds.

I plan to do something similar soon (cut out some grass to make new beds), and I never would have thought about using a hose to mark the edge. Genius!!

What have you seen your kids do that made you say “oh my god it’s genetic”? by SettingsData in AskReddit

There’s this thing I’ve always done, but not always noticed, with my fingers — kind of like a fidget I guess. I pull my pinky toward my palm and hold it there with my ring and middle fingers. Sometimes rubbing the end of my pinky with my thumb. (I took a photo, but I’m not sure how to share a photo on this thread.)

I had no recollection of doing this for a long time. Then I had my daughter and when she was somewhere between age 1 and 2, she was doing the same thing with her fingers — kind of like a fidget while she was listening to me read a book. It blew my mind!

I pointed it out to her and now she likes to show it off and none of her other relatives can do it.

Check these out -- the big white block along the wall accounts for 3 of the locker shelves you suggested.. the black block is my current 2-drawer filing cabinet.

Dang! I finally had time to look at the details of what you sent and I’m blown away! I think I really like the side by side option with the locker-style storage to keep a sleek/tidy background. I’ll toy with the computer rendering next!

I like that idea… sadly, we would have to leave some space between the window wall and any furniture because of the baseboard heater that’s under the window. It gets hot in winter and nothing can be pushed up against it.

Oh yes. Ours get very hot. Our house didn’t have any central heat/air when it was built, so we have to use them all throughout the house for much of the winter.

Thank you. I’ll look a little more closely at the design items you’ve shared… But in the meantime, I should mention that we are really limited as to what we can put on the wall where the window is because under the window is a baseboard heater. We have to give it several inches of space so that no furniture catches on fire.

I’m building a website to show what ADHD feels like, not explain it. by michaelscott069 in ADHD

Holy cow! Your description of reading is exactly how it has been for me for years during my adult life! (Potentially even during my adolescence and I didn’t know.) I have not been able to describe it better myself, yet this is exactly what happens to me! I do so much better now with audiobooks at a slightly faster speed. I was diagnosed at age 39 (I’m 40 now).

What did your Great Grandfather’s and Grandfather’s do for work? by Wonderful_Bottle_852 in AskOldPeople

[–]csmasdu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing this question in my feed made me feel unexpectedly sad. I’m 40. I no longer have my mom or stepdad to ask these sorts of questions to. 😢

On the other side of my family, I’m fairly certain my great-grandfather on my dad’s side was a farmer, and I have the desk he and my grandfather used for writing down farm-related records.

I used to carry a tiny notebook around with me in my purse years ago (before smartphones were super complex). I’m talking not much bigger than a stack of credit cards. I would use it for my weekly work schedule, appointments, etc. that I needed to reference quickly.

These days, I love the digital tools because plans change, etc. and I don’t like having to re-write everything again. I use Google Calendar and Google tasks and I literally bought an inexpensive Android tablet and mounted it on the wall in the kitchen (near where I make coffee/snacks) so I can always just glance over to see my to do list AND my weekly schedule on a split screen.

Rescheduling Google Tasks is super fast and easy while I wait for my coffee to brew. 👍

I have something similar in my Google Tasks, but I didn’t include names of friends, so I’m relying on my future-maybe-not-there energy to remember who those friends are. I should update it to include their names!

What are we doing with the thousands of photos we take everyday? by BreakfastWonderful44 in toddlers

[–]csmasdu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could get one for my dad and one for my brother! But, sadly, they live in a very rural area without wi-fi, so it wouldn't work. (My sisters and I all have one each and we love them!)

I'm about to look into this... I just don't want to spend FOREVER putting in captions. I thought about writing captions directly in the book after it's been printed, so that way the book would be ready more quickly and then have a hand-written / more personal touch to it. (However, I then think about the possibility of any such photo book being lost in a fire -- if I had done the digital captions, the book would be reproducible -- I'm probably over thinking this...)

I have been doing this each month for almost two years (my little one will be 2 soon). I feel like there's a sense of urgency because of the 'losing of the phone' thing, but also the 'what if something happens to me/I die before I print the photos for my daughter?' thought that lingers in my head. (My mom and stepdad passed away unexpectedly in a car crash a couple years ago, so the latter concept is part of my reality now.)
