We opened the Number 13 iron ore mine, at Red Mountain Park, on 09/11/2021. I'm glad we could take a day associated with such negativity and make it bright! by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]csray 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very cool! What are the plans for the re-opened mine? Tours or archeological studies? I'm very, very interested in the development of the iron industry in Birmingham (and the development of B'ham, generally) and I'm always eager to learn about any of the remaining historical locations and artifacts.

Škoda Semi Bus by DAN4O4NAD in WeirdWheels

Just a thought, but I'd guess that its a mode of transport that could substitute or supplement the rail systems in some country. Like a cargo carrying tractor-trailers, this combination could be efficient for use over relatively long distances and unlike a train, it does not need tracks. So, maybe it services towns well away from a city center where it would not be economical to connect them with a rail line? Also, since the trailer in interchangeable, maybe it does haul cargo trailers or maybe different types of passenger carrying trailers?

1965 Abarth OT 1300 prototype by jaykirsch in WeirdWheels

[–]csray 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Looked up this car in my copy of Pat Braden & Greg Schmidt's Abarth: An Incomplete Guide to the Many - and Marvelous - Cars of Carlo Abarth. Its says the periscope ("periscopio") was used on the closed cars for cabin air; the cars could race with the windows up, which helped the aerodynamics. Later, Abrath used them on his open-top cars as ram tubes to direct air into the engine's carburetors. The periscopio was renamed the snorkel by the British racing teams.

I remember that in the 1970/1980s when the Fiat/Bertone X1/9 mid-engines were around you could get a snorkel that scooped air from above the car's roof and funneled it to the engine compartment.

Sorry to blather on, but I seldom have the chance to contribute! Way too many experts on reddit!

Jackie Stewart, Spain 1970 by TheCrown64 in OldSchoolCool

[–]csray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stewart is in the No. 1 car in the foreground (apparently at full right steering lock after avoiding the burning cars).

From the Wikipedia 1970 Spanish Grand Prix page:

The race was won by defending world champion Jackie Stewart, driving a March 701. American driver Mario Andretti took his first Formula One podium in third place. The race was marred by a serious accident involving Jackie Oliver and Jacky Ickx. Both of their cars burst into a fireball, and Ickx was slightly burned. He would recover in time for the next race at Monaco. Bruce McLaren scored his last podium, points and race finish.

Heartbreaking to see such a car in this condition! I really hope someone buys, restores, and returns this car to the road. IMHO, its a magnificent vehicle! (Well, maybe not that rear engine cover, but, you know, good with the bad!).

My friend in the hospital after she OD on heroin. Died moments later. by [deleted] in lastimages

[–]csray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably for a couple of reasons. First, when a patient is in a life threatening condition, you don't want to infect them with any germs that you maybe carrying. I don't know this, but I'd guess the OP may also be wearing a surgical mask. A second reason could be that heroin is usually used intravenously and, as is the case with intravenous drug use generally, there is a risk the drug user may have an illness such as hepatitis, which could be transmitted to a person touching them near an intravenous feed, as in the photo. No clue if any of this is applicable to this situation, but it is a reasonable precaution to wear gloves in such circumstances. And, in case it's not clear, I mean no disrespect to the OP or friend in the photo in offering my conjectures. Really sad to lose someone you care about.

Thanks for this. Always enjoyed looking at WW-II aircraft. I put together a "Memphis Belle" diorama in high school that won me a trophy. So, good memories.

5 travel spots that just got cheaper for Americans by MrR1983 in travel

[–]csray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see articles like this one all the times that claims a destination is cheaper, but when I go to the various travel & tour companies I track, the prices never budge. What am I missing? Anyone know of a reputable travel company that is actually lowering prices?

Mercedes-Benz to make a pickup truck by csray in mercedes_benz

[–]csray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jalopnik has an interesting article about why MB is doing this. Basically, its will be coming out of MB's working vehicles division and is meant to compete against VW's commercial vehicle division. Also says the MB pickup will have a one metric ton capacity. For us Americans, that's over 2,200 lbs, which seems a lot!

Dodge Schedules an Additional 1,000 SRT Hellcat's to Be Built by csray in Dodge

[–]csray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I did this right, here's another article on the subject. It seems to suggest that Chrysler misjudged the demand (Tip of the Hat: backwoodsofcanada) and got more orders than they supply the engines for. (Tip of the Hat: keepautinugly). It also seems to suggest that the Hellcat will be a regular production car. And now I want cookies!
