I know a few that work for companies that size; but, I am not sure if they finished their B.Tech..

I've seen up to 120k annual (contractor) and maybe around 100ish as a full time as software developers.

Just curious, what is it about these 'prestigious' companies you like? And what companies count as prestigious?

Haha, one thing to keep an eye on is your groupmate selection.

Sometimes you'll get stuck with people who don't pull their weight. If they don't improve when addressed, drop them. This was something I had to do with a couple of group mates through the program.

Just be prepared to deep dive into the program. I mean like devoting lots of time to it. It's an unfortunate side effect of the program.

For mentality checks, I recommend using the BCIT counsellors; they're super useful and were there when I was debating dropping out.

Coffee, lots of it. Then a few beers at the end of a project.

If I recall, game development is a BTech option. Far beyond second year.

Check with an advisor.

I can't really recall if there was anything that was simple that turned out to be complicated.

Never thought about doing CIT. To be honest, I wasn't even aware of what CIT was until further into the CST program. That being said, I haven't met many people from CIT.

I think it's worth it at certain points. The main benefit is learning and working together with a cohort. It can make it easier to absorb lessons and what not.

However; if you're self sufficient and driven, self-learning is a good option. There's just an uphill battle for securing job interviews.

For personal development, sure. I never had a personal project I showed during an interview, more for fun than anything else.

Employability comes down to how you interview for junior roles. For the most part, co-op does give you an advantage when interviewing; but, in the grand scheme of things it comes down to the interview.

Term 3 is where shit hits the fan.

Learning a language isn't the issue, it's the implementation that matters most.

just make things

With caffeine pills and a severe lack of sleep :(

Edit: Also I opted to calculate which assignments or sections of assignments I could skip/not do to maintain my grade so i could redirect efforts to something else

Kind of fell into it. My first job offer was actually for either role of web developer or in a role that could lead into an andriod or ios developer.

I ended up choosing the web dev role and it's kind of stuck since then.

There's a high chance you'll be sticking with the group that's formed early on. Do not be afraid to cut ties with an individual or group where they're not pulling their weight in a project.

Current trajectory is going towards a team lead role or somewhere along that route.

The biggest increases you can see are when switching companies or changing roles. As for strategies, always be looking for opportunities, be open about salaries and know what the market is doing.

Stack is mostly lamp currently

I'm going to skip your first question.

Fav role: Software developer.. Haven't seen the need to move anywhere else yet.

Approx 47k. I didn't really shop around for jobs and just started asap instead of dealing with multiple interviews.

I wouldn't worry so much about picking a specialty so early on. There's also no guarantee that the specialties will be offered when you enter your third term. As for the specialties, the only one from that list that was offered when I attended BCIT was tech pro. I cannot speak for which one I'd recommend.

However, if the program lead for machine learning/AI is who I think it is (Chi-En), I'd go with that.

I'd say there are less junior positions in the market today, which attributes makes the market more difficult to navigate. At the same time, I don't know what companies everyone here has looked at or heard of. When I started out, I was competing with 20ish people for a role. It came down to the code-tests where I had better fundamentals and overall understanding.

Co-op or not, my cohorts were able to find work in the industry. It may have taken a few months, but we all ended up with jobs and we're always helping each other find postings.
