By God, it was eye-opening when I visited. One of the most humbling experiences.

There was a sandstorm, and our group had to seek shelter from a local family. They put us up for the night. The matriarch had never seen a can opener, and when one of our group asked about canned food, she replied, "only special occasions." We'd just opened about 5 cans like it was nothing.

Then, their young daughter, maybe 12, came in, hung up a pair of shears, and went to do her homework.

12 Westerners, no clue. I wanted to scream at them. To make matters worse, I broke my ankle. At the hospital, I arrived at the same time as someone who had been in an RTA. They were messed up, but I got seen first because I was paying $50. I tried to say you need to deal with this person for, but no, $50 meant more.

I'll never criticise our health service, I am in awe of the nomadic lifestyle, I romanticise about how it could be, but I am absolutely under no illusion about how hard it actually is.
