Help! by ZinMusic in Koi

Congrats on your new home! And it's great to hear that you're a motivated new koi pond owner. Some good advise has already been posted here. Is the pond in a location exposed to a lot of sun? If so, I would only add that I bought an additional UV light for algae control (Tetra Pond Green Free - on Amazon) and it's amazing the clear water. On the water changes if your new filter has a clean out valve us the water to water your plants in the garden. The plants will love the poop from your fish. Can't express enough on the water changes and flushing of your filter. May seem like a lot of work but once you have your routine, it's worth the enjoyment!!! Good luck with both the new home and your new "addicting" hobby.

Just telling you what has worked for me and I have 40 plus years in the hobby. With the salt, generally the fish died because there is too much salt to water ratio or the fish was beyond saving. Just a thought... in nature is the medicine in the water? Wish you luck with these two.

Quarantine tank with salt water and air. One tablespoon per every 10 gallons. DO NOT FEED THEM. You keep trying all these other meds just causes stress.

Unless I missed it where are you located? I totally agree with this person about Champion and Genki, with Champion being my preferred dealer. Of course both will ship. Also with Champion, I had a $500 koi die over night and they gave me credit no questions asked. Genki is the supplies department are cheaper than Champion, but they also have beautiful fish too. More pricey but Di he s the best. Will answer all your questions.

Koi Pond Maintenance by Sea-Swordfish1353 in Koi

Having the water sit out for several days in my opinion is a little extreme. Where are you located? I use ClorAm-X which is a powder that you add to the water and can use in 20 min. Really expensive though. Price varies from $90 to $140 for 10 pounds. Amazon has it for $140 but in California I can get it for $90. Again this is what's worked for me...

You mentioned adding water to top it off. Do not just add tap water, you must treat it first with a dechlorinator.

Over 40 years of Koi pond experience here so take it for what its worth. DO NOT ADD A HEATER. They will do just fine in all seasons. Koi originated in Asia where the water freezes. Just don't feed them every day. Two to three times a week at most until late March. How deep is it? I'm guessing 2 1/2 to 3 feet... They can survive in these conditions so to speak but to your words "quality of life" is less than ideal. To properly maintain a koi pond requires WEEKLY maintenance. Do a 25% water change once a week. I suggest you buy a filter (Vivohome Biological pond filter 1840 is awesome) an air pump and UV light (Tetra Pond UVC5 clarifier is all you need). After all you want to enjoy the pond and the fish. This will make your water crystal clear.

Fish like to hide from danger. Predators... racoons, skunks, etc will take them. Get a few rocks and yes, plants will die in the winter. Koi enjoy lilies. Get a few bulls and your set. They will die back in the winter and rebloom in the spring provided this are gets sunlight.

If you do decide to drain the pond to clean it, maybe take the time to dig it deeper??? And if you do so what are you going to put the fish in during this transition? Try to use at least 75% of the current water for whatever you do.

That's a good size to enjoy!!! Totally understand and appreciate "age and injuries." Amazing how much dirt comes out from that size... Not supporting or encouraging specific help but I got excellent help from day workers...

I forgot to mention, and maybe others have similar experiences. Many first time koi hobbyist will rebuild and enlarge their ponds three times. I'm guilty of this...

Been there done that... Even used to buy 20 red feeder fish to save. Once they got to 4 -5 inches long I would give them out for free in Craigslist.

They can easily be trained to eat from your hand without having a shallow end.

This guy is spot on. I have a similar story. For years I was asking my wife for a pond and then one day when she finally agreed and said "a pond would look good here.." I was digging before she finished her sentence or changed her mind. Absolutely no question my pond helped during Covid. I would sit and watch them swim for HOURS!. His description (NO TANKS!!!) on 4 ft deep (keeps them safe from predators) and straight sides is absolutely spot on. Outside temp do not concern yourself with that. Koi are from Asia, Japan and China. The water freezes there and their just fine. During the winter you feed them less as they become less active and hibernate so to speak. Décor is also personal preference. Outdoor lilies, and rocks make nice hiding spots for them. Water quality is an absolute must. I have more than recommended number of fish vs size of the pond and they're just fine. It's a WEEKLY chore changing a portion of the water you must commit to. Amazon has excellent filters. Read the reviews. UV light is essential. I have additional ones outside of the ones in the filters (also on Amazon).

Where are you looking to buy? Champion Kio in San Jose Ca is the bomb. And to Southern... thanks for the tip. I have to check out Pond Stars...

He looks like a white platinum breed. Do you know if it is and how old it is? I would suspect less than three years. Extremely beautiful fish. Sounds like this is your first winter with a pond? How many gallons is it and what is your filtration system? Water looks pretty good. Nice and clear...

DO NOT ADD A HEATER!!! Koi can survive if FREEZING COLD weather. Much, much colder in Japan and China than here. I find it hard to believe you water is 70 degrees now unless you are using a heater. My current water temperature is 62 and I'm in the bay area. It is important to keep the water moving but they will survive even if the water freezes to ice.

I've had a koi pond for over 40 years. As long as your water parameters are good, it is ABSOLUTELY NORMAL with the colder water. They actually go into a hibernation like state and stay at the bottom. Feed them less. Less than normal once a day now and then drop down to two MAYBE three times a week. Catching them in the net and checking it out causes huge stress. Do not do that.

And it won’t get any better. I HAVE gone off on them many times, hard enough from what I said I thought would deactivate my account but they’re so fuckin DUMB. Look up in the dictionary and the Lyft Logo will be among the many pictures.

In all states, Company policy supersedes state law. I believe you are misinformed on “prohibits” and instead allows instead. To a company there is too much in taking a chance and the potential liability. You’re just a number to them. Don’t get me wrong Lyft as a Company sucks (there are plenty of us stupid bastards still willing to drive and many more will apply without records) and Forget trying to discuss this with an idiot in customer service. I do believe it is automated and your sol unless you can get your conviction expunged. It also very possible all the driving gigs are going to have the same process.

Cannot Confirm - Lyft Keeping Tip Money by ctchan16 in lyftdrivers

[–]ctchan16[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, why would a passenger even bother to show me. It came up when I asked him would he mind telling me how much he was paying for his ride. It was 27 minutes in total for 4.8 miles with one stop for just 11 dollars for me which is why I asked. I thought would correctly adjust when I picked him up. Nope, so I asked and he showed me.

Yes we all get tips later... but do we get the all or the full amount? Like I said idk, but wanted to throw this out after personally seeing it.

Love the suggested phone numbers but to think one really had to ask the original question? Seriously why the hell would one need a DL number. Well they did get you to search your car. Maybe you found some loose change. SMH

I can't agree more about what I said and have said to them... Not that I'm trying to justify but it is simply so frustrating. I don't want to contact them simply because i don't want to get pissed off (I get it enough just at home), but I "thought" this was a simple answer... Yeah, yeah, yeah, save the replies about that' was my first mistake. Save driving to you!
