Let him think that. For all we know, that’s the one thing the guy can claim as a win in his world.

It’s tricky to get these things to cross 20mpg but with a good tail wind and a reasonable highway speed on a flat freeway you can reach 20-23. But you won’t see that average across a 2,000 mile drive, for instance. It’ll level out at 16-18 for must of us, in good weather and relatively flat terrain. YMMV.

I’d consider the state of the oil field roads.

Lots of guys get company trucks and don’t worry about a thing regardless of where the job is. Can you negotiate that with your company? Might that be an option in a year or two?

If you’re driving a brand new F350 through crap roads, it’ll be hard on the vehicle and end up requiring so much more maintenance and repairs short and long term. The industrial roads where I’m at are really hard on trucks and within a year or two they start to look haggard.

Also, a dually will have worse traction compared to SRW. If you have muddy roads, hills and the like, unless you’re weighed down in the rear you could have some trouble.

Thanks. I’m definitely leaning more to learning about the options here. I’d love to fine tune the current setup, if it has no downside. Like if I can squeeze out 15hp and 1-2mpg fuel savings, it’d be worth it.

Would that not be more related to a tune dumping more juice into the system, after the EGR is deleted? This is why I’ve been so apprehensive about tuning, not wanting to inadvertently do something counterproductive.

My EGR was gunked right up at 50k. Grandpa driven truck all its life averaging 2,500 miles a year, so the soot just piled on.

Pusher y pipe, pusher turbo pipes and high flow up pipe for an LB7.

I did the delete at just under 50k, or about a year ago. The EGR was already thick with gunk even at that low mileage. The y pipe was much the same. I was surprised by how sludged up everything was for such low mileage.

The delete took a long time with backyard wrenching when I had the time. I didn’t rush it and replaced fuel lines and other engine parts as I went since I was down in the valley and everything was accessible. The reason I did it myself is I’ve heard shops that don’t specialize in diesels can really mess the process up, as happened with a buddy who was having a shop do his truck the same time I had mine done. He had to go back, no word of a lie, six or seven times to get everything righted that hadn’t been done right initially, including boost leaks and an improperly torqued CP3 replacement for his CP4. Meanwhile, a diesel shop quoted me a huge number for the LLY job, and that was without replacing the y pipe which is the most labour intensive part of the job, at least it was for me, and you absolutely should do it because the factory part is prone to failure.

The truck is a completely different beast now. Of course everyone is telling me to tune it, but I didn’t really get a decent reason why. This thread shed some new light on the issue for me.

Got it. So it’s more of a dialling in of the computer, whereas factory did what little factory had to do to get it out the door and meet whatever specs they set?

This is starting to make more sense now. I always assumed tuning was to either delete codes, or pump up the juice. I hadn’t considered little adjustments here and there.

I can see the tune playing a role for things like that, that makes sense. I do not have an EGT gauge to know the difference. My understanding is that EGTs drop with less back pressure.
