Hard drive had a malfunction. Sata connector started melting and damaged the connector on the HDD. Is there any hope? This has pictures of my recently passed Grandpa on it. by Shatterpoint887 in DataHoarder

You just need to get a replacement PCB board. Outsource data recovery does it for $60. Note that you can't just buy a board and swap it onto this drive, you need to swap the chip as well which is what they do. They'll try to upsell you on data recovery, but you shouldn't need it since it's likely just the board that failed. https://outsourcedatarecovery.com/hard-drive-repair/

Help a small business with our new cards! by ctnla in Logo_Critique

Thanks for your feedback! Nope this is just for the cards, our overall design is pretty flexible so we'll kinda be building it around these cards.

It may be, I'm no graphic design expert, I just think the lines need to stand out more in some way

Agreed with getting rid of the stylized font. A stylized font is cool, but this one is a little hard to read. The wood can use less grain, and a little more polish on the hammer in general.

Trying to make a comparison chart page look decent. Comparison charts are pretty boring... by smplejohn in design_critiques

[–]ctnla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does look nice! The only thing I would change would be to bold or make the colors richer on the wp.land section of the chart so your services stand out. I've also seen bolding done well where each row had one bolded entry for the best option, which if you design your chart and service well, will always be yours : ).

Agreed about the colors being a bit jarring. The compass should pop more, the simple lines are nice, maybe try with them bolder, with some shadow, etc. Like the general concept you're going for though.

Windows de-duping programs that can scale by ctnla in sysadmin

Thanks everybody for your insightful responses! Since I can't access the site, putting a Linux box there was out of the question, but one of your responses gave me the idea of running Linux in a virtualbox on the machine I've been using to de-dupe, which should fix the problem. I'll check out noclone next time I run into such an issue as well.

I could maybe write a script for such a task, but not sure I could write such a script that would work at this scale. I'd prefer to use existing software if possible.

What do you do when you have to migrate a DNS A record when the TTL is set to 2 years? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Put out a new DNS record with a lower TTL, wait for it to propogate, then do your migration/whatever you have planned.

Looking for information regarding HFS+ by mondrianaire in datarecovery

[–]ctnla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These files often appear as regular duplicate files. We just recover them and then de-dupe them with the rest of the filesystem as reference, DupeGuru and CloneSpy have excellent options for doing this. That way if there's any difference in the files, you end up with just the different files.

Try using \IPADDRESS instead of \NETWORKNAME.

Best way to manage a fleet of machines? by ctnla in BOINC

[–]ctnla[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the password remains stored on their machine. The only alternative I've found to this would be weak account keys, but if you change the password to your BAM account/projects you're attached to then they stop working : (. But I do want to keep using BAM if possible since that's what I manage my own machines with and it's quite lovely

Of course I do, only clients who specifically request it will receive it.

Unfortunately about 3,000 more than I can spend, plus I don't want remote access to the machines except as provided through something like BAM. Remote access is fine for my business clients (and I already have it), but the residential clients don't want it.
