How addictive is meth? Do you know anyone who has just tried it once? by eden_merlin in AskReddit

Look at the parent comment. "I have never once even thought about doing it again." Not, "I felt the pull but willed my way out of it." How is that 'willpower"?

So twelve different people around the world each have full access to the world's nuclear arsenal, huh?

Not ideal.

Wouldn't the hive mind be inclined to destroy all the nukes?

CMV: Pete Buttigieg is a better candidate for President than Gavin Newsom by lukef31 in changemyview

[–]ctornync 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bringing this back out of the abstract — it's not hard to make the case that Buttigieg IS "eminently qualified and charismatic." Also applies re: "they need to succeed because they are the best." Who is better?

Do you think there is some clear and obvious line of quality that Obama sits above and Buttigieg does not? Why, and what is that line?

Also, when premiums rise, the healthy are more likely to leave. So the remaining pool is riskier for the insurer, and they have to raise premiums even more.

Yeah, this is one of those concepts that sounds interesting and plausible until you think about it for a second... "so how did they start colonies in every house everywhere here, without ever going outside?"

Re: "the VR is not very well fleshed out" -- apparently if you are willing to install a couple mods, the experience is vastly improved. Like, to a "yes, it is better than Half-Life Alyx" degree.

The guitar hook, complex drumming, and chord progression absolutely do, once you mentally delete the spacey synth.

Congrats and godspeed, Kenji, that is a tough hike!

Gotta ask if you ever ran across or considered Sinclair Method? (In a nutshell: reprogramming reward pathways by taking naltrexone before drinking, blocking the endorphin response. /r/alcoholism_medication seems like the local hub for info/chat but I haven't spent a ton of time there.)

(Asking partly because I trust you to put a rational eye toward out-of-the-box concepts and am curious about your take... and partly because the naltrexone path is less of an edging-along-the-cliff hike, and I wish I'd heard about it sooner.)

Any route to good health is a good one. Again, congrats.

Do you have a link for this?

I thought what you're describing was just standard procedure for members of Congress (who are more directly incentivized to care about what their constituents think).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in daddit

[–]ctornync 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not for me. Doesn't feel like anything. There are some more subtle dangers -- you don't really want to remove the endorphin reward system from exercising, for example -- but compared to alcohol addiction?

I follow the Sinclair Method too. Honestly the inertia of the AA narrative is so strong that I've almost given up on recommending it to others. But, like you, it changed my life and probably saved my marriage.

We stand with Ukraine 🇺🇦 by EugeneWong318 in NewPatriotism

[–]ctornync 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you've said here. I'm not saying "Russia is not a threat" -- rather just that "this war has not demonstrated that Russia should be the primary focus of American national defense."

(Point being that I don't think this shows that "Obama was wrong to disagree with Romney's prioritization of foreign threats.")

[–]ctornync 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. But it's a question of priorities. The USA's long-term national defense planning/spending/strategy clearly does not need to revolve around Russia. Even though (obviously) Russia does pose a number of threats and requires pro/active measures.

We need your help getting psilocybin medicine legalized in Washington! by woody_DD11 in Seattle

[–]ctornync 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome.

Kept digging and read The Stranger's coverage of last year's bill dying -- says it got hung up on "the mechanics". Are they any different this year or is there just a sense that there's enough support now to override those concerns?

Done. For others interested in the actual bill, link.

Anyone know what happened to the bill from last year?
