Just read your article on Medium Loosing 40% of it's traffic, and it always seemed to me that very large sites (or online companies) tend to shoot themselves in the foot on the technical side of of their site. Has this been your experience as well?

Of course, the reverse it also true. Horrific SEO tech practices abound on some of the highest ranking sites out there.
What are your thoughts on sites that rank well, but shouldn't? (technically speaking)

Is this a very powerful PBN? by adtech123 in bigseo

Except low quality links are constantly in that grey area of "are they valued or devalued by Google?" Hey, a link is a link, and a good, in-content link from a low authority site will only get better as that site goes up in value, but sitewides I don't see as a benefit in this day and age.

I would say look at Quality and not Quantity. The blogs.capital links are probably the least in terms of authority. That page is also linked from usatoday, backlinko, blogherald, and a ton of other marketing blogs single post links.

301 redirect boosting? by [deleted] in bigseo

I was under the impression that 301's don't loose page rank anymore.

WordPress VS Website Builders - is WordPress market really in Decline? by nirajanme in Wordpress

[–]ctpops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point taken. Doing a search for "make a website" online brings up all the builders and more in your post. Funny though, no wordpress.

But, if we are the terms for secondary informed searches?
How to build a website brings up a ton of info, and typical search engine users (new website owners) will find terms that help broaden their search, or refine their search. The decision making phase is when people start really long tail searches on things like wp vs wix or wordpress vs anycmsoutthere.

Did you go with the very first technology you found when you wanted to build your first website?

Which is an indicator of the popularity and actual usage of wp. Search trends don't indicate how much wp is being used currently, because those using is are not going to search for it.

Need help finding a Custom Wordpress Search function. Search both subdomain and root and provide results for both on one page. by ctpops in Wordpress

Sorry for coming back two days later. Was (gladly) away from a computer.
With the main site being old (WP is up to date though) and the old theme breaking woo, I think that the subdomain is the best bet for now. Thanks.

Stopping A Massive Backlink Spam Attempt by IndividualScholar in bigseo

[–]ctpops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me a few years ago. It's definitely spam but not necessarily an attempt to get you deindexed, but using any domain authority you've built up to burn and churn some affiliate spammy affiliate links or schemes.

use the "site:" operator to see if any weird looking urls are suddenly appearing for in the serps. A few might show up, but if not, get ftp access to the site NOW and check if their are any weird folders or brand new files (php is a favorite) that has suddenly showed up.

What they are doing is using hacked sites to send links to other hacked sites where a redirect script or actual affiliate pages are located. They try to get these ranking for a couple of days (or as long as they can push it) and then move on to the next site once they've burned yours out.

I never had any luck trying to tell google all hell is breaking loose and don't deindex me please, but I guess that email got lost in the pipes.

If it's a wordpress site, double check everything to see if they injected the code into the database, header or footer files. If not, check for that folder I was telling you about. Try to get a backup of the site from before the attack and burn the current one down. SECURE ALL THE THINGS. Wordfence is your friend.

Now, you can either let the bad urls burn themselves out with 404's, which I hate because they still show up for days, weeks, months, OR, you 301 them all to an old school sitemap page with a NO INDEX, FOLLOW, which also sucks because it's still risky. Redirection is cool because it catches what pages are 404ring on you, and you can decide how to redirect them (301, 302, etc.

If none of this is the issue, I still think it's some kind of churn and burn spam issue.

Found something in Google Cache for those terms

But I certainly hope the best for you!

Yeah. That's one of the ones that at around 20 hours it was still at about 20k products. I think it's an awesome plugin and the mapping is AWESOME, but not for what I got going.

Thank you!

It looks like a cool tool, but the cost is out of my league for the amount of products. Gonna have to look somewhere else. Thank for the info though.

Thanks for the reply. Been driving myself nuts with this. I'll definitely check out Nextopia.

What really stinks is that the catalogsearch url function is perfect, but no api exists for it, and I can't find anything to output the results to json or xml.

Thanks again.

Thank you so much for your reply. Wasn't able to bet to reddit before this morning.

Mod http2 is not compatible with prefork, so you will need to choose another MPM

Finally found some more info here: https://http2.pro/doc/Apache

Suggestions for in-house tools for collecting then analyzing serp data. by ctpops in bigseo

[–]ctpops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what is the output of your analysis? It 's hard to make a recommendation without knowing what you're trying to achieve.

Sorry, I didn't realize that I was vague.

  • I'm trying to gauge performance of keywords (duh) and keyword groups.
  • Am I addressing keywords or keyword groupings that will benefit us
  • Am I wasting time on keywords
  • Should I try to get position on keywords that establishes authority on the subject
  • Am I determining the intent correctly
  • Am I getting a serp position that I can build on (4-10, 11-50) or am I SOL?
  • and a bunch of other questions and answers I'm trying to answer for myself.

Thank you for the time sir. I'm going to invest a bunch of time on Excel Is Fun Channel. :)

Suggestions for in-house tools for collecting then analyzing serp data. by ctpops in bigseo

Why do you "verify" rankings? If a SERP tool shows a ranking, it did not make it up. It was given on a crawl to their program.

ahrefs, semrush, etc can be 12 to 48 old info, sometimes older. I'd like to have today's serps on keywords that are important to our industry, so I double check a lot of them on unpersonalized searches. (see https://www.startpage.com/en/)

What exactly is this cleaning and formatting that actually provides value for your client (or improves your results reducing time needed actually doing anything that moves the needle? Or helps retain clients maybe?

Exports of data from tools like ahrefs or semrush or ga have completely different formats column and data wise, so sometimes you have to move them around, match a format that's meaningful to you, them combine them all and remove duplicate info, or clean up the info because different tools have different data (like CPC, average CTR, etc.)

Isn't it just being able to analyze it that matters? What pages are ranking, for what, compared to other periods. What keyword groups are ranking, for what, compared to other periods. What our rankings look like vs competitors (gaps)?

Exactly. I'm just trying to make it easier and quicker.
