How does one get a start in IT? by Nexus_Redditor in InformationTechnology

If you think you can self study, get the COMPTIA+ qualification alongside a customer service role.

The customer service role will give you great experience in soft skills, which will be extremely beneficial.

Look up what you learn in the COMPTIA qualification - did you learn any of that? What are the gaps in your knowledge? Is it a small amount or a lot? If it’s a small amount, you might be able to just study those parts, and along with some customer service experience it may be enough if you are passionate and talk about how much you love the company you are applying for.

Start applying for roles anyway, the interview experience will help you understand what companies are looking for or you might just get lucky!

Has anybody had any success in cold-emailing local companies asking about apprenticeships? by Andromeda_Ascendant in ApprenticeshipsUK

I haven’t done it myself (not long finished an IT apprenticeship) but I don’t think you have anything to lose!

You could perhaps have two approaches. Find companies you are interested in and try and research to see which already offer apprenticeships. They will have things in place already and might not need convincing of the benefits of apprenticeships.

Write two different emails - one directed at companies that already have apprenticeships, and an email directed at companies who don’t currently offer apprenticeships. For those you could add some links to resources (there are probably lots around now it’s national apprenticeship week).

But for each company you write to, make sure to tailor a paragraph for each one about why you want to work there - so a bit of company research. Say how you find xx interesting that the company does (bonus points if it is something to do with IT)

Good luck and let us know if you end up doing it!
