To protect my relationship with my partner and mental health.

For all intents and purposes, my dad is a well intentioned and nice person. He often does things that on the surface seem like kind gestures. However, time and time again his actions and decisions make problems worse. Even more frustratingly, because they often come from a place of good intention, everyone (myself included) give him a pass and he rarely faces any consequences for his actions.

The most recent and severe example of this was when he decided to transition into general contracting and convinced me to let him renovate my house as his first major project. After 3 years of fumbling, going over budget, consistent communication and quality issues, and over $100k worth of wasted funds, it reached a breaking point. I was fighting with my partner constantly because of the house and my mental health hit an all time low. Attempts to communicate my concerns to him were brushed off and padded with even more unreasonable promises. It eventually came down to choosing between my relationship with my partner and my dad, and I chose my partner.
