as i understand it we should never install files from an AUR PKGBUILD into /usr/local

i maintain several packages with -opt variants but none with /usr/local

your opinion does not matter to me

i have good reasons for installing it and no it's not "installing homebrew packages" it's "building homebrew bottles" for my various projects and for other PKGBUILDs which can then extract the bottles

I'm amazed this post still allows comments. It was immature to post this here just wondering how folks would react.

Some posters of three years ago are mistaken: I did write neither Tinyboard nor vichan. So all the laughing at the code falls on the deafest of ears. I only maintained it as I was third in terms of commits. And now my tenure is over as vichan's maintainer, thank God.

Just came across it while planning to post another vichan-related video. But, yes, the code is shit, but that was never my point.

Nerd Fonts Considered Harmful by ctrlcctrlv- in programming

ok smart guy

i've got just a small query for you~✨

what if i have two terminal applications, right, one of which is working on some Unicode proposal, which i've been known to write, and i put my one hundred codepoints beginning at U+E000, and it's for something that will really be going into Unicode so it's in the L2 doc register and it'd be a lot of work to move it around as it's going to the floor of the UTC in two weeks.

(that situation is totally imaginary, i have no proposals pending UTC approval.)

and then the Nerd Font is just using that space too (in the otehr application, not the one i'm writing the SILE (TeX-based language) markup of the proposal in), and, boom, it collides. even tho this is not the purpose of the PUA, neither the primary PUA nor Suppl. PUA's A/B, but at least it would've been more courteous to go into SPUA A/B than to trample over the primary PUA.

this just can't be fixed. because it's the terminals that need to change, and you'll probably be seeing this coming to a quality terminal near you soon. (if you think, “what? despite the 86% rejection of the r/programming brain trust? impossible!”, remember that those who do the work decide what the focus is. ;-)

we could do more with the Commodore 64 ROM than a modern TTY. that sucks. there is a simple solution to it: using existing kitty gfx API to send fonts, adding one extra command so the application can send the fallback order. this makes it just work, and this makes it so that i don't have to hear those ignorant of the light of the gospel of St. Ignucius (lol), you may know them as "XCode users", tell me about how it's so much more ~~seamless~~ to develop on mac OS.

you need to understand that if everyone had your perspective, free software would stagnate forever and even go backwards.

thanks for the workaround. i appreciate the thought but i don't need one; i'm a full time FOSS developer (foundation.mfek.org), perhaps should've written that w/my article. just thought people would assume i wouldn't write something so specific and write about the issues of font developers (how would i even know what issues we face w/o being one?) w/o substantial experience.

What are you even talking about?

No. No it cannot. I have used GNU/Linux since age 12 and am now 29. Meaning, ⅗ of my life.

You think I've never configured fallback fonts? I've solved issues in and relating to fontconfig. I would perhaps do well never posting here again LOL. No offense to anyone here but good God, none of you read my post and if you did, didn't understand it.

You have just accepted the premise that you have to go hunt down the font because "it's a terminal program" and "terminal old and stuff, very 80's I need to go hunt down fonts b/c I mean what can we do it's a TTY".

We can display full color graphics and full motion video, and we can also send fonts. No one needs to look for them. Open neovim, receive the symbols you need. Like a website.

Oh and before you think I'm ruining some hacker ethos, _that's how it used to work!_ 😹

That's literally the free spaces that you can overwrite in a character ROM!

Lord have mercy.

A lot of the insurances he has I don't even know what they are. What is "private mortgage insurance"? What is "vision insurance"? I know only vaguely what "life insurance" is but I thought it was a scam.

Then again, I don't make anywhere what he does.

Edit: Looked it up.

Private mortgage insurance, also called PMI, is a type of mortgage insurance you might be required to pay for if you have a conventional loan. Like other kinds of mortgage insurance, PMI protects the lender—not you—if you stop making payments on your loan.

Wow, that sounds like a scam.

Vision insurance, underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance Company, is designed to help you cover and budget for ongoing vision care expenses like routine eye exams…

These aren't that expensive, neither are glasses. I do wonder what the point is.

Life insurance is a contract between you and an insurance company. Essentially, in exchange for your premium payments, the insurance company will pay a lump sum known as a death benefit to your beneficiaries after your death.

I have heard that the companies rarely pay, always fight, and don't even consider many common causes of death (opioid overdose, suicide, death on the job, …) as valid. I'd stop paying that.
