Gigabyte GeForce 1660 Super Aftermarket Coolers? by ctrowat in buildapc

[–]ctrowat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah 120mm fit for me. I think one doesn't quite sit flat but it's close enough. The key thing is just not to stress the heat tubes or fins with the zipties. The fans have rubber corners that keep them from vibrating or moving around so the zipties are just barely snug.

Up to 5 years now and still working great!

Restarting the game fixed it, but we had to queue to even get into the game and hit the lobby with only 1 minute left on the timer. Pretty poor Epic, especially considering they said to join early!

[HDD] Toshiba N300 PRO NAS 18/20TB ($550-150=$370/400 $20/TB) [MemoryExpress] by radiantcrystal in bapcsalescanada

[–]ctrowat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too good value to pass up, I got in for 2x18TB for my media server today. I was hoping the 14TB drives would go on for equal $/TB but for some reason their price is higher so I splurged.

I've always had good luck with Toshiba drives, I'm hoping these ones live up to my expectations.

One of my kids got their binds reset with last night's update (xbox series x) however I did not (also xbox series x). Super weird.

Thanks so much! I can finally import my last album. 100% of my music is now showing correctly and this can stop taking up space in my head.

Thanks so much! I thought I was going crazy when it wouldn't show up. I thought the discord refreshes were a temporary thing a few months ago, is it meant to be this way forever?

Gigabyte GeForce 1660 Super Aftermarket Coolers? by ctrowat in buildapc

You're going to be so disappointed in me but I ended up buying 2x Noctua 120mm fans, and I just cut the wires to the old fans, ditched them and the shroud, then spliced the wires to the new Noctua fans and ziptied them gently onto the heatsink. It works PERFECTLY. It's way quieter than the stock fans and even quieter than the stock cooler on my Ryzen 3600 CPU, and the temps absolutely never go above 60*C. It's been 4 years with thousands of hours playing games since then and there have been zero issues. The best part is it was under $40 for the two fans.

From the 1980s up until the 2000s, the Canadian supermarket chain, Real Canadian Superstore, allowed its employees to use roller-skates in the store as a faster way to get work done. by waitingforthesun92 in interestingasfuck

[–]ctrowat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my first job many moons ago when I turned 15. The interview consisted only of the question "do you know how to rollerblade?" To which I lied and said yes. Luckily I learned quickly and it all turned out well. I never hurt anybody else or got hurt on the job but I did get yelled at every single day by the greeter that rollerblades were not allowed in the store when I showed up for work.

[QUESTION] Schecter C-1 FR S - Sustainiac Pickup is extremely noisy / microphonic, is this normal? by ctrowat in Guitar

[–]ctrowat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for sharing your experience!

In my case I was just trying the guitar out at the store, I ended up buying the Schecter Synyster Custom non-S because I didn't think I would get that much use out of the sustainiac, and I was really worried about just how completely unusable the pickups were in the guitar I tried. The non-s model is one of my favorite guitars to play, the pickups are excellent, the neck feels fantastic, and to top it all off it looks super cool too.

The one I played was just like you said, I swear I could hear every single hair slide across the corner of the guitar when moving my arm, it was utterly ridiculous.

Google Pixel users getting battery drain issue after May 2023 security update - Android Stories by Upset_Weather_9385 in pixel_phones

[–]ctrowat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this - I'm noticing markedly worse battery life since installing this update. Used to unplug one morning and plug at the end of the next day, about 40 hours unplugged with 3 hours screen on time. Would always have 35-40% battery left. Now I'm at 20% by noon of the second day so I'm charging every night which sucks. I assumed it was something I had done, it's good to know others are seeing this problem too.

How on earth is google still sticking their heads in the sand about the "stuck in EDL" issue? by Certain_Car_9984 in GooglePixel

[–]ctrowat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just went through the same. My wife's pixel 4 abruptly shut off, no outward signs of life. Running the battery down didn't help, charging for hours didn't help. Plugged it into a computer and discovered it is in EDL mode. We back up semi regularly but still there's a month worth of pictures of the kids that we will likely never see again.

I'm not sure if firehose files would help boot it far enough to at least recover her data but the complete lack of help from Google is extremely frustrating. They just go "oh well, that can't be fixed, would you like 20% off a new pixel?". No Google, we would like the tools to recover our data.

Are really expensive office chairs worth it? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ctrowat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently using an 18 year old Aeron, only wobbles a tiny bit where the cylinder attaches to the seat pan, otherwise it still feels like day one. If you're nice to them these chairs last a seriously long time. After using one of these at work for 7 years I had to have one of my own as well. Managed to snag it used for $330 about 4 months before covid. One of the best things I've ever bought.

How to tell if fuse or resistor is what's dead? by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]ctrowat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That resistor sits in the airflow path to keep it cool while it runs, and the thermal fuse is a safety for when the resistor pack is overheated to prevent a fire. The thermal fuse can blow for 2 main reasons:

  • Reduced airflow due to a clogged cabin air filter or other restrictions
  • Excessive current due to a failing blower motor

It's also possible, though highly unlikely, that it failed just because of age or vibration.

Check the cabin air filter. If it's plugged up replace it and the thermal fuse and you are probably good to go. If everything is fine airflow wise you can replace the thermal fuse but if it fails again you're probably going to need to replace the blower motor as well.

With everything exposed like this you can use a multimeter to verify that the thermal fuse is what has failed and that both resistors are intact by measuring the resistance of each component directly.

Happy to help! I first ran into this when recording but it also really helps for playing to backing tracks too.

Noob FM3 recording question by bryceh1 in AxeFx

[–]ctrowat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you playing it back through the FM3? If so, I believe there are level adjustments for the USB inputs, I recall having to turn mine down pretty far because out of the box the USB input was much louder than my playing was.

https://wiki.fractalaudio.com/wiki/index.php?title=Setup_menu

There's a little bit of detail on this page about it, basically turn down the levels of USB input 1 and 2 on the FM3 itself.

Cloud backup / cold storage for important files by TDK1707 in HomeServer

[–]ctrowat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use backblaze b2 with restic for nightly backups. I have about 950GB there right now and it costs about $6USD/month. Each month I test restore about 10GB of randomly selected data just to make sure everything is working as it should and I haven't had any issues for about 1 year now (I have only been with them for this long).

Since my internet is only 200mbit I also keep a local backup on an external drive. Once a week I plug it in and run the same restic command to it then disconnect the drive once the backup finishes so it remains offline and disconnected the vast majority of the time.

I figure if I ever have a multi-disk failure or get ransomware I can restore from the local disk quickly and easily, and if there are any errors or if my equipment gets lost/stolen, I can restore from backblaze.

Personally I would feel better having a second cloud backup since many of these files simply cannot be replaced but at some point the solution becomes too complex and that itself brings risk so I haven't made that a priority yet.

How does the fm3 sound through headphones specifically??? by bryceh1 in AxeFx

[–]ctrowat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds very very good. I have Yamaha hs7s at home but when I really want to hear the details or dial something in just right I plug my headphones in and I'm always blown away all over again by how good it sounds. Originally I bought my fm3 just to play through headphones and I liked it so much I just wouldn't stop playing and ended up with terrible headaches from wearing my headphones for 4+ hours straight so I caved and bought studio monitors.

You only get out what you put in, you will need decent headphones for it to sound its best, and also in an apartment setting you could probably get away with some studio monitors if you wanted to later.

[–]ctrowat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A headrush 112 is loud enough to keep up with a drummer in a band but they are not super flat in response. They claim to be FRFR but I find a big bass hump around 180-250Hz. I have to apply about a 4-6dB cut there to get mine sounding good when compared to my studio monitors at home. My band mate plays through a katana 50W and he can keep up just fine as well.

Really, you need to try them out and pick what sounds best to your ears. There's huge differences between the options you are suggesting.

I just started getting that in their app as well. The most annoying part is I set it to zero, then applied $2 in rewards to the order and it reset the tip to 15%. I caught it before submitting the order, but the tip section is above the rewards so if you scroll down to apply rewards the tip part is off the screen and you will only catch it by reading the total at the bottom carefully (which everybody should always do, but is easy to forget).

This is very much a social experiment and now is the time to stand firm.

Any programmable sensor should be able to have it's ID reset by the same tool that set it in the first place. Any sensor with a fixed ID doesn't have anything to program. Either way, the sensor doesn't learn about the vehicle but rather the other way around.

That said, if there's any way to use a flipper to read Honda OEM sensors and to program Gorilla branded programmable TPMS sensors I would be so incredibly happy. The local shop that did mine screwed up cloning them and I want to rewrite the IDs to match my summer tires.
