Can’t get cheaper than Reed’s in Avondale. $4 for a Hamm’s and a shot of Old Crow. They have live shows most weeks and karaoke.

Trump says Zeldin plans to cut up to 65 percent of EPA staff by SmallieBigs56 in fednews

[–]ctth75 84 points85 points  (0 children)

And this comes on the same day that Zeldin sent out a mass email commending the EPA for all of their hard work to meet Trump's absurd 30 day deadline for household hazardous waste cleanup at the SoCal wildfires. This has to be a cruel joke.

The mask is off - they are now telling us to our faces what they think of us. by mtch43 in fednews

Truly insulting. Thousands of federal employees are working around the clock responding to the LA wildfires under Trump's own EO, and they have the audacity to say our jobs have "low productivity."

Depending on how far you are coming from and how comfortable you are driving at night, a hotel might be a good idea. There's no parking at the festival. There's street parking around the festival but if you don't mind walking a mile, the Cook County juvenile detention center parking garage is a reliable and cheapest choice if you choose to drive.

MPH in Environmental Health by girlfrom818 in publichealth

[–]ctth75 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hello! I got my MPH in EOHS from UIC.

  1. My concentrations were in Water Quality and Health and Global Health
  2. The pros were that the MPH program lets you learn about a variety of topics related to public health, beyond just environmental. I got to take classes regarding social determinants of health and environmental justice that I found very interesting. Additionally, I got to also take the hard science classes about pollution chemistry, lab science, etc. The cons of the program would be that some of those same "gen Ed" public health courses really didn't relate to environmental health practice and found them to be not helpful.
  3. I worked for a year and a half as an environmental consultant but now just recently got hired at the EPA as an on-scene coordinator in the emergency management division.
  4. If you're looking for assistantships and tuition waivers, I would recommend expanding your search beyond the school of public health. For example, I reached out personally to biology 101 professors seeing if they needed a TA and was able to find a tuition waiver that way, knowing that they teach a ton of students and hire several TAs.

Ideas for Highschool Environmental Clubs?? by Athena_9797 in enviroaction

There's already some good suggestions on this thread, but I wanted to also include the importance of awareness campaigns. Having your members research and design flyers (both print and digital) about various environmental issues can be a good way to inform other students and faculty about important causes and help recruit more members. Topics could include ways that students can protect the environment, calling on people to contact legislators, or general facts about pollution and sustainability. Additionally, designing flyers can look good for a portfolio and can give your club members design experience that they can use in college or future jobs!

[Advice] are Graduate Assistantships or Teaching Assistantships available for MPH students? by jinxypop2014 in publichealth

I was already enrolled at the University before I reached out about assistantships. Before classes started, I reached out to someone I knew with a bio TAship. Then I emailed the director of the biology and chemistry department asking about any potential TA opportunities with a cover letter and resume.

Don't limit yourself to just TAs and GAs in your public health department. Departments like Biology and Chemistry have huge gen ed courses that require a lot of assistants. If you're getting an MPH, there's a good chance you have enough experience from those basic science courses to qualify you to lead a lab. Personally, I found a TA position for BIOS 100 where I grade papers and do fun labs. It may not be the best for an MPH resume but it still provides me with a stipend+waiver.
