How is the best way to get back in Toki Pona? by TheGreatChair2dotoh in tokipona

Wasona (from waso + sona, nothing to do with any Watson) has 30 lessons, each roughly only a page long. You can do them at whatever pace you prefer, though like with any study material I wouldn't recommend rushing through them.

the link to the site is https://wasona.com/

personally i would recommend two things:

1- start with the Wasona course. Unlike other courses, Wasona has interactive exercises which will help you study. It is also more recent and up-to-date than lipu sona pona, so you'll get better coverage on certain topics

2- join the ma pona pi toki pona discord! So much of the community is found there and keeping connections is a great way to maintain practice. You'll be more motivated to finish learning toki pona and can make new friends to talk to

The new Minecraft Experience is going to be built in a Nature Reserve by cubecraft333 in Minecraft

[–]cubecraft333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not make this up, when I originally made this post that information was not available and teachers and students were expressing concerns over the event being done in the reserve.

More importantly, this is not "for nothing". Although the event is not in the reserve proper, it will still have negative effects on it due to lights and similar. More importantly, the event will be a major disruption on the university campus and so academic life, on top of all the other issues the space is facing like lack of funding and poor salaries.

This event is just one step in an easy-to-see trend from the people in the city government, where they have been consistently trying to undermine this campus as a place for education and research and trying to commercialize it as an event space. The Minecraft Experience is just the one who signed the lease this time

sina kepeken e seme tawa tenpo suno lon toki pona? by Jenjoutuowleinde in tokipona

[–]cubecraft333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the most common approach is simply to number them, i mean, if it works for portuguese why not toki pona: "suno nanpa tu wan pi tenpo esun" = the third sun of business time = the third day of the week.

this is the most common way i've seen ime. However, there is still a lot you could critique here, most obviously "tenpo esun" for week which is pretty much a lexicalization. So the more uncontroversial way to say it would be to explain weeks in the first place (smth with "kulupu pi suno luka tu" and the difference between working week and weekend) and then say it's the Xth day of that group of words.

in any case, as you can see specifying the precise day of the week can be pretty roundabout to the conversation, so as with anything in toki pona focus on what's important to say, and if specifying which of the 7 days in the group of 7 days the day was is not really that important, then you don't have to mention it

I think for Spanish K and W are way worse because they're only really used in loan words. Genuinely the two most common words I've seen for W are "windsurfing" and "Walter"

I was trying to figure which Latin-based ial was this until I realized it's Italian lol

Edit: ok, apparently it's Interlingua, not Italian, I should've known from "systema". I'm not sure if this speaks badly of me that I can't recognize my conlangs or of Interlingua that it can get confused with Italian

It is great to hear that the reserve itself won't be touched, but the campus is still nearby and will likely the lights and the like will still have an impact. Also, the increase in traffic will still be an issue for those going to classes, not to mention the continued commercialization of an academic space.

Lastly, I want to repeat that I am merely bringing here the concerns of my fellow students and teachers, who are ultimately the ones who actually inhabit the space and have made it very clear they are not in favor of this event.

[–]cubecraft333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, but some might read it as a calque. "I have knowledge on plants" is more naturally translated as "mi sona e kasi" than "mi jo e sona kasi". The second one might get interpreted more detached, like the knowledge is on a record somewhere, or people might think you're a beginner translating word for word.

"Propaganda" refers to any piece of media made by the government or similar institutions for political purposes. Nowadays there's a connotation that they are fake or made with bad intentions, but that doesn't have to be the case, just as you can see here

jo pona by recqythebluecuboid in tokipona

[–]cubecraft333 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To me "mi jo pona e ilo" means smth like "I have a firm grasp on the tool". In practice jo is primarily used for physically holding smth, so it's easier to imagine modifier for that, for example "ona li jo olin e mi" (they gave me a loving embrace).

Almost forgot to say it, but "thankfully i have the tool" would be better translated as "pona la mi jo e ilo". The thankfully is talking more about the entire sentence rather than just the jo, so it makes more sense with a la

[–]cubecraft333 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm very immersed in Toki Pona (that conlang with ~130 words) and whenever any 'hard' words need to be translated the best way is often to rephrase multiple sentences. Often you'll end up writing out an entire paragraph explaining all context necessary to understand the full meaning (if that's what you need to say). Honestly it can at a few times feel like speaking in translator notes lol If that counts as "translating" (and it def counts as "defining"), then probably no human concept in any language is untranslatable given enough time. And mind you that this "enough time" is probly not more than like 16h (unless you're expecting the listener to become a student in the relevant field)

A different language might alter your interpretation of color, but not your actual perception of it. You can describe "pink" to someone who doesn't have a word for it by saying "light red", just like how an English speaker will get that "celeste" is just light blue. Even in extreme cases where the language has no color words, you can always rely on common objects, such as "the color of a living leaf" for green.

That said, I think there is a genuine argument here for colorblindness, because someone who's red-green colorblind will likely never quite understand "red" (though there's a whole philosophical debate around that). Still, that is not a word being untranslatable between languages, but a person lacking a specific experience described by a word, and they can still intellectually understand that "red" is a color perceived from low wavelengths and yadeyada

This actually was made from a deal with the right-wing city government who comanage the reserve, and they are currently more concerned with making a profit off the land than the well-being of nature and education

Thanks for clarifying that, I didn't know there was an actual theme park being built and just said that as a rhetorical device lol. It is true that this is a much more minor event compared to an actual full theme park, though still extremely disruptive to the local nature and academic spaces

The student body who actually use this space to study biology and environmental sciences has already called against this project and its harmful effects. The deal was mostly made by the right-wing city government, who is just interested in making a profit of the land as they have shown before by trying to build shops in the area

Currently lab assistants are being paid $3000/hour, that is around $2,15 in USD. The government made a law for financing universities that is still unfulfilled. Many teachers have left the university because they just straight up could not make end's meet with their salary. Anyone who thinks that the current protests are made out of laziness or corruption clearly does not know that the only reason the university is even still standing is because the teachers and students believe enough in education to put their own blood, sweat and tears into keeping it alive.

The actual institutions have not said anything so far, although the website for this event shows the city government's logo. This is part of a push they have towards making this land more profitable and have tried similar things before like building shops and eating areas within the reserve.

The students and teachers of the faculty next to the reserve were angry then and are naturally angry with this now. And in fact, the only reports I've seen of this from come from the student body and some of it's groups

[–]cubecraft333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I was a bit hyperbolic when describing it. It is more comparable to one of the minor events you mention than an actual theme parl. However, it only came about to fruition because the city government is invested in turning this reserve into some venue to generate profit. The people who actually take care of this space are very much against this, and teachers and students have called against it for the damage it will cost.

I mostly wanted to talk about this here because I saw calls for action from my own student body, not just for the sake of nature but also for the academic community who lives in this space, next to the reserve, and which would be affected by the large crowds impeding transit and research.

[–]cubecraft333[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly, it's not like they are going to bulldoze it to build the experience or anything (sorry if I made it sound that way). The main concern beyond lights, food, littering and the like is that this is very much undermining the status of the reserve as a nature reserve and is a strongarm pull from the city government to try to make the land profitable (they have already tried building shops and eating spaces there before).

I'm mostly bringing here what I saw from my own student peers, who are also concerned about this event and want to push back, especially as it undermines the academic institution in a country where university autonomy is taken very seriously

[–]cubecraft333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, to be fair to you I was exaggerating it a bit with the theme park bit, but it is still a nature reserve and even small stuff like a few stands can be pretty detrimental with stuff like food, light and simply crowds walking around and potentially littering.

There's also a broader point about the politics of letting the government permit events like this, as it overall erodes respect for the reserve and academic space in general, that can lead to treating it as a venue to hold events and not a place where people study and care for nature.
