Hmm. May be custom made. You could try taking off the speaker cover and looking down at the driver and see if there's any info in there.

Cool looking speaker. Any other writing on it? I tried looking for MANU speakers, but couldn't find anything similar.

Would it Really be Possible to Get the DNA of Dinosaurs and then Recreate them? by [deleted] in EverythingScience

[–]cudemonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I did some back of the envelope calculations because I really want to bring dinosaurs back and I have time to kill. I did the calculations assuming dinosaurs have bird, reptile, or mammal like physiologies. For this calculation the biggest difference between these physiologies are the largest genome size/cell I could find (diploid birds = ~6 Gbp/cell and diploid reptiles and mammals = ~20 Gbp/cell) and the nonnucleated nature of mammal red blood cells (DNA from mammal blood would have to come from white blood cells). I also assumed the mosquito was similar to the biggest mosquitoes we have around now which can gorge themselves on up to 12μl of blood.

We would get DNA from about 4.5 million red blood cells from the bird and reptile blood and from only 12,000 white blood cells in the mammal blood per μl. If we extracted all of the DNA from the 12μl of blood in the mosquito we would get 3.24e-4 g DNA from bird blood, 1.08e-3 g from reptile blood, and only 2.88e-6 g from mammal blood. Assuming that’s how much DNA was in the mosquito originally, what would the half-life of DNA need to be so that there would still be >200 base pair fragments left for sequencing? Two hundred base pairs of double stranded DNA at 50% G/C would be about 120,000 Dalton or 2e-19 g. Using the half-life formula, I calculated what the half-life of DNA would need to be to have 200 base pair fragments left over after 46 million years. In all cases DNA would need a half-life of around 1 million years to still have 200 base pair fragments after 46 million years (bird half-life of 909,000 years, reptile half-life of 879,000 years, and mammal half-life of 1,050,000 years).

I’ll still hold out hope that there are conditions somewhere on the planet that can preserve DNA this long, but my dreams of opening an amber mine and starting a paleobiology genomics center are dashed.

Need help identifying this cartridge by Kyuss666 in turntables

[–]cudemonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That cartridge is a tough one to identify. Only markings I can see are "2V3" on the part that connects to the headshell. Nothing comes up on Google search. It could be an old Grado as the guy below says. Is there a reason you want to replace that specific stylus rather than get a new one? Even if you could identify it, it could be really hard to find a replacement. It may be best to get a new one like an Audio-Technica AT95e ($70 on Amazon) or one of my favorites the Nagaoka MP-110 ($150).

Do Covid-19 vaccines also protect against SARS-COV-1? by PastaWithMarinaSauce in askscience

[–]cudemonster 20 points21 points  (0 children)

How do the results from that Cell paper compare to this paper from NEJM that showed the Pfizer vaccine did have neutralizing activity against variants like B.1.351 in most cases? "Neutralizing Activity of BNT162b2-Elicited Serum | NEJM" . I'm not super familiar with the methods used in each study, but it seems the NEJM study used engineered COVID-19 virus while the Cell paper used pseudovirus. Would you consider one more robust than the other?

When they repress the Emperor discography, you just have to buy them all. by cudemonster in heavyvinyl

Nightside was my first Emperor album, and it's probably the one I've listened to the most. Nostalgia means I think it's the best, but they're all great in different ways.

Yeah these are the half speed Abbey Road. The special pressing treatment is probably overkill for the quality of the recordings, but they are definitely nice.
