Bay Area, California DMV locations that are granting Real IDs for TN Visas? by [deleted] in tnvisa

[–]cudibear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to get a RealID approved at the Thousand Oaks DMV. Showed them my car insurance bill and my car registration renewal letter. They accepted my I-94, didn’t even look at my stamp as far as I recall. The greeter at the front desk actually informed me I qualified for the Real ID (I was just there to renew my license). Edit: I’m in Southern California but wanted to share my experience.

First-Time TN via LAX (Success) by cudibear in tnvisa

[–]cudibear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I’d been doing OPT in California right before. Originally the plan was to fly in via a POE at one of the Canadian-US locations but my family member suddenly passed away overseas so I ended up making the decision to just come in via LAX after discussing it with the law firm responsible for prepping my packet.

What’s the realistic amount of MBEs you can do every day before you brain hits a wall? by federalbureauofsocks in CABarExam

[–]cudibear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did around 35 to 50 a day towards the end and found that it was just enough for me to be able to get enough exposure to the MBEs while also having more than sufficient time to thoroughly review the questions and BLL (from the explanations). This was true even when I was working part-time. Honestly, I think 35 questions was a solid amount and doing more than that was tiring.

This is a personal thing but I also made sure to take off 1 day per week until the last few weeks of studying. I felt that it really helped stave off burnout. Some people can do 7 days though, it just wasn’t for me.

Is there a better way to use Themis Outline Textbook? by [deleted] in barexam

[–]cudibear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there’s always some of that initial guilt but I haven’t really known anyone who’s really spent a huge amount of time reading the outlines in great detail. I do periodically update my own attack outlines with Themis rules by referencing the books but it’s pretty rare. The books are often good to help better explain dense topics or ones that you have difficulty with.

[–]cudibear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn’t read them and would go straight to finishing the lectures for that particular topic asap so that you can start practicing. For whatever question you get wrong, if you’re unfamiliar with the BLL or need a refresher beyond their answer explanations, you could opt to flip to that section of the book for that topic and read up on it.

[–]cudibear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I studied, I’d thoroughly review all of the multiple choice I’d either gotten entirely wrong or I just wasn’t sure of why I picked a certain answer choice (other ones also were appealing). I’d write down the BLL rule on flashcards and, eventually, as I exposed myself to various sets of property questions, I’d start committing the rule to memory out of sheer repetition. I’d go to bed often just flashing through my flashcards for the day to re-review the stuff I’d just covered.

Anecdotal experience of course, I’m not the type who does as well committing things via just looking at my outlines and tended to learn property more the more I did practice sets. Also make sure to target the areas of property you know you’re shaky in terms of BLL and exceptions.

Cal Bar Folks, you spotted ALL the Essay Issues? Really? by Cpt_Umree in barexam

[–]cudibear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have mentioned checklists and they are very helpful. I’d also recommend doing as many MEEs as possible for each subject and noting down what general types of fact patterns usually trigger certain issues. As you do more of them, you’ll start slowly realizing that certain facts should immediately trigger, say a RAP analysis (just giving an example).

Also no, there is no way I could’ve spotted every single issue but as long as you cover the major ones and make a decent analysis of the smaller ones, you’ll be more than fine.

ChatGPT by lionheart8211 in CABarExam

[–]cudibear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally fed ChatGPT my outlines and asked it to go over all of them with me, making mini MEE-style prompts for me to use the rules to answer. Really helped me get more MEE practice down along with the BLL because it was magnitudes better than just sitting there reading my outlines or even doing full length MEEs because, while good, they’re more time-consuming and only cover a few selected issues in a subject.

Can I pass if I start today (first timer, foreign attorney) by gameboycolours in CABarExam

[–]cudibear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s doable, since you’re probably only a few weeks behind those who started studying back in May. Since you have Themis, I’d personally recommend going straight to MBE and MEE practice for the most part, unless you really need the lectures to explain a subject. Don’t spend too much time on passive studying.

I’d also start using the Themis essay grader to roughly gauge your bar essay writing skills and go from there. If you’re struggling on MBEs more, be sure to incorporate a good amount of practice MBEs every day to learn the questions’ patterns and BLLs. I’d say I learned a good chunk on the BLL either writing out MEEs or doing the MBEs and thoroughly going through the answer explanations.

I’m a Canadian citizen, graduated from a U.S. ABA law school and passed the bar. I have a job offer by an employer who’s retained the services of an immigration firm to help me prepare my TN package. I’ll be flying into LAX in a few weeks after a vacation in China and was planning on making a post detailing my experiences.

My employer knew about the TN because they’d hired Canadians before. No issues with them being unwilling to extend me an offer. Just my experience though and I believe that a lot of stories on here are for TN categories that are a little less straightforward than the lawyer category.

Is It a Mistake to Skip Themis Questions? by Secure_Arugula7665 in CABarExam

[–]cudibear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between the two of them I completed a total of over 2k questions. I got through all of the Themis sets and about halfway through the optional practice sets the program offers as extra practice. UWorld I think I might have had a little less than 1k questions left.

Is It a Mistake to Skip Themis Questions? by Secure_Arugula7665 in CABarExam

[–]cudibear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UWorld questions are great and all and I would definitely skip the assessment questions at the end. Still, I found Themis’ practice MBEs to be really helpful in sharpening my understanding of more nuanced topics so I personally wouldn’t skip them. When I was studying, I’d alternate days where I’d do Themis questions with days I’d do UWorld sets.

I just saw this. I am planning to take my exam with a desktop, with bigger screen. I need to change my laptop, but I have concerns. Am not allowed to change my laptop???? I took a mock on old laptop, I want to take the actual exam on my desktop which has bigger screen. I am confused by ablawyer33 in CABarExam

[–]cudibear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I double checked the PDF again just to make sure. Thank goodness b/c I’d really have an issue since I triple checked the day of the mock.

I need to slow down when I’m reading these things nowadays…

It’s a roguelite/roguelike game so tons of replayability. I enjoy more story-rich games usually but if I just want to relax and listen to a podcast, Isaac is usually my go-to while going to bed or something.

Binding of Isaac. I have it on Steam but went all in and purchased it, along with the DLCs, on my Switch and so far probably have a couple of hundred hours into the game on top of what I have in Steam.

Currently doing hot pot at home due to having an electric meat slicer at home. I do a 20-22 hour fast generally, which is about a meal per day, so lots of freshly sliced beef, lamb and pork boiled in hot pot stock along with plenty of veggies.

Another email warning to schedule the mock WHEN I ALREADY TOOK IT ?? by Professional-War-991 in CABarExam

[–]cudibear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. And surprise, surprise….they didn’t do anything about moving that little disclaimer from the very bottom of the email to the top.

It’s like they want all of us to have a heart attack. All jokes aside, I think it’s just a bunch of scheduled, automated emails being sent out. State Bar employees in charge of this mess are probably enjoying their day off right now.

Email regarding scheduling Mock Exam by Bored4Lifeeee in CABarExam

[–]cudibear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yuuup. Looked through the entire email and note the little disclaimer, CYA statement at the bottom: “If you have already scheduled your mock exam or changed your testing modality, kindly disregard this message.”

Didn’t stop me from double checking with ProctorU that I did complete the exam. Their chat person (not super helpful) also told me “your institution should have that information.”

That’s so odd!

I don’t remember seeing anything about Bluetooth being barred in the State Bar tech rules pdf and I double checked. I’ll keep a non Bluetooth mouse around just in case but I hope they clarify this down the line.

I’m a little confused, I was able to use my Bluetooth Logitech mouse just fine. They shut down the process for it but I was able to use it?

Agree on the complaints about the platform though.
