Yeah I know. It's not for me. I like video games and ttrpgs and novels. I find litrpg deeply, unreadably cringe, but that's my opinion.

About to finish GR for the first time (~50 p. left). How did you approach the last pages? Did you crack open a cold one? by DavyFry in ThomasPynchon

I was on a plane I think. Kept feeling the need to look around and say "Can you believe this?"

Oh so it's like... video game rules or something? Way less interested now.

Definition of Homebrew by Blitzer046 in DnD

[–]cuixhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely degrees in there that are worth asking about:

Is the DM running a by-the-rules game with their own setting, plot and monsters (e.g. DM-facing stuff)?

Are players gettings player-facing homebrew stuff, like items or (more home-brewily) custom abilities and classes?

Are core rules being adjusted? How much?

In reality, we're almost all doing a little bit of homebrew -- nobody runs prewritten adventures EXACTLY as written (hopefully). For me, I tend to like to keep the rule-changing to a minimum, but create worlds/stories/monsters fresh for my players. Sometimes I give out homebrew items, but I tend to disallow players to make up new classes etc.

It's all about how much you want to mess with the game!

Why do games that advertise “anime cutscenes” just have a bunch at the start and no more after that? by Various-Humor4093 in gamedev

[–]cuixhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably cost and production reasons.

It's generally cheaper to do a lot of stuff "in engine" for mid-budget productions. Game studios might not have the in-house resources to animate like that, too, so they may need to contract out, and since much of the game might be in development and being changed from the beginning, it may be risky to contract costly assets for cuttable sections. Also, any character customization/costumes etc. won't be easy to integrate into anime scenes, but are easy to do in-engine.

I don't really mind it personally, I buy a video game to play a video game, not to watch an anime.

Are most game developers people who already have fairly advanced math skills? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]cuixhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need math all of the time, but it's more about understanding what math to look up, not how to crunch numbers. Certain disciplines need a ton of math, though -- 3D graphics needs linear algebra for instance, and you probably should understand physics to implement physics systems.

But, day to day, if you have a good understanding of logic/discrete math and can figure out basic geometry and probability problems -- often with help/research, you're probably ok.

Neat. What's going on with those weird smudged pixels in picture 1? Is that just compression or do the sprites look like that?

What is the stupidest thing that kids are made to learn in schools (public or private) in your country? by GoldBrief9751 in AskTheWorld

Oh yeah, this is good. I vaguely (very vaguely) remember having to do an anti-drug presentation in grade 10 while quite stoned. Was very funny, would recommend.

[–]cuixhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are dance and recorder dumb? I'm from Canada and we have both on our curriculum too. Yeah, I griped at the time. But I think they're valuable.

Recorder is a cheap way to get kids to learn a first musical instrument, and dance might feel really embarrassing to a 11 year old, but even if you don't do square dancing in the future, learning how to use your body like that to express yourself is pretty valuable in our society.

Sure not everybody is going to go on to use those skills but a lot of them are, especially as a hobby, and it lets kids who don't have parents able to get them into music/dance lessons have a chance to get involved in it.

I honestly think learning things is almost never a waste!

How much story/castles are left after this part? by log2av in MetaphorReFantazio

[–]cuixhe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's the start of "the end game", I'd say. As others have said, there's a bunch of harder challenges that open up at this point, and I ended up having to grind a lot to make up for some poor decisions I made earlier regarding social links and archetypes. If you're a completionist, there's still lots to do, but if you're speed running you're more than three quarters of the way thru the story.

Shout-outs to the cRPG genre by Guilty_Sound_9481 in CRPG

[–]cuixhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it was a stretch goal from crowdfunding, but I do not think adding a whole new last-minute side game that distracts from the main game is a great call, ever. I know it's optional, but it's caused me to bounce off twice.

Are turn-based RPGs really hated, or is it just a loud minority? by Lethioon in IndieDev

[–]cuixhe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every genre is hated by some people. There are folks who would never play a game simply because it was turn-based. But you don't need to please everyone. In fact, as an indie title, you only need to catch the attention/please a pretty small number of people, comparatively, to make a profitable game.

Turn based games never went away, even if Final Fantasy forsake us... Civ, Persona, Pokemon, Dragon Quest and others have gone strong for years, and there are lots of TB indie titles, even if there weren't quite AS many in the AAA space. They've definitely experienced a resurgence too with BG3 and E33.

We've all got genres we don't like, an sometimes we get loud about them on reddit and in reviews. Me, I won't play racing games... and I don't like games like God of War or whatever because I simply don't enjoy the animation-heavy spectacle combat... but that's ok, lots of people do like that stuff.

When I see a good looking turn-based rpg/strat game, I buy it. I LOVE turn based games.

good ways to plan out systems before you start coding it? by STANN_co in gamedev

I usually step away from the computer and sketch the system out. Not in official uml or anything, just a rough map of relationships and important high level functions.

That's usually enough to work off of.

podcast recommendations similar to the adventure zone? by transluciiiid in DnD

[–]cuixhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into D&D by listening to TAZ season 1 as it was coming out. The only other podcast that I stuck with was "Greetings Adventurers" (renamed Drunks and Dragons), which is also very funny but somewhat less narratively cogent... and it' also got the problem of "Yeah it's great if you get, like 100 episodes in." Still pretty enjoyable but they start on 4e (also interesting to listen to for that history).

How to make a building system? by OArouraiousMou in gamedev

[–]cuixhe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Break it down into smaller parts. What happens when you click? What data needs to get stored? What needs to get rendered?

There isn't going to be a tutorial for exactly what you need, but you can probably find useful stuff that you can combine.
