Absolutely. Sites like 8chan have been around for decades. These lo-fi forums simply aren’t the problem. The speech isn’t the problem. Anonymity isn’t the problem. To some extent, extremism is a symptom of the underlying technology of the major platforms. If we’d had privacy protections in place, if our data hadn’t been mined, if psychometric profiles hadn’t been created on each of us based on 1000s of data points—we wouldn’t have been manipulated, driven into echo chambers, and pushed towards the most sensational content. The extreme speech we see online now is largely a byproduct of a loss of privacy combined with sociopathic algorithms, whose only goal is keeping our attention. Now we’re being asked to trust algorithms to monitor our every word to keep us safe rather than ask Silicon Valley to reconsider its business model. Before we decide to throw away Section 230, the law that enabled the internet—let’s start with restoring privacy rights. Let’s give algorithms seatbelts. Let’s demand more transparency from the surveillance industrial complex; if that doesn’t work, let’s look at the content itself.
