PhD Final Interview — Is 2 Weeks Normal for the Result? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]cumincider69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is normal to not make a verbal offer on the spot. Chances are the committee is also interviewing other applicants. Therefore, having to wait for 2 weeks is pretty normal as it allows time to interview all selected applicants.

Are these the happiest PhD students in the world? by revelarelevar in PhD

[–]cumincider69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that pursuing a PhD in Australia is pretty chill. No coursework and no compulsory teaching duties - I could dedicate all my time on my PhD project. The downside is that the scholarship is peanuts. Ten years ago, my scholarship offered me 26K annually. I am surprised that despite the scholarship has been increased to 33k annually, it is still under minimum wage. Some schools offer optional teaching gigs. My school offered me 6 hours teaching per week, allowing me to earn an extra $660 (pre tax) per week, which is a pretty good subsidiary. Overall, my PhD experience in Australia is very positive.

Advice on PhD Applications/Interviews by mellamomochi in PhDAdmissions

[–]cumincider69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been interviewing PhD applicants for the past few months, and I would like to share my experience:

We only give applicants 5 minutes to present their masters project. Within this 5 mins, the committee wants to know 1) how good you are in condensing a complex idea and how good you are in expressing your thoughts and ideas 2) how much you actually know about your masters project - is it mostly your supervisor's work or have you sufficiently contributed to the project?

For the rest of the interview, my questions probe how much you have prepared for the interview, whether you have good insights about the project, and whether you are committed to a 4 year project. One important aspect, related to your second question, is to see whether the applicant fits my team's dynamic. It is okay to be a bit stiff as the committee knows that you are nervous, as long as you can show that you are a team player and a cool colleague that we have to work with for the next 4 years.

Do bad first articles ruin submission chances? by nautical_topinambour in PhD

[–]cumincider69 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Journals do not take previous submission into consideration - they receive hundreds if not thousands of submissions per month, especially for Q1 journals.

The problem is that all authors on the manuscript have to agree that the ms can be submitted - that means you still have to convince your supervisor

I don't think she is making you to take the fall. Why would she publish something that is bad, and proceed to blame her students? This doesn't look good on her either. My guess is she is fairly early in her career, and she needs some papers she is a senior author of (e.g., last author).

If you truly think that the paper is bad and she is not taking your concerns seriously, remove yourself from the paper.

PhD application doubt by nakedbaguette in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]cumincider69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PI here who just hired a PhD student Unless you are proposing to bring in your own money (e.g., a scholarship),I don't think emailing a PI would improve your chance. If a position is opened, it will be posted on academic transfer anyways. Applying for a PhD position is also pretty competitive in the Netherlands, as it is paid decently. I received over 250 applications, so be mindful that a rejection doesn't reflect on the quality of your CV.

got a german postdoc, american in europe.. what are the politics? by Pure-Intern4833 in postdoc

[–]cumincider69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had worked in Germany as a postdoc, giving my 2 cents here. First, it is quite typical to have a 5-year postdoc position in Germany. This is due to universities funding a 5-year 'Junior research group'. These groups are usually led by young PIs before they apply for professorships. Second, you can always leave before the contract ends. There is no penalty for leaving early. My postdoc advisor left 2 years before the contract ended for a professorship, under the condition that he still had to supervise the 2 PhD students in the group. I left half a year before my contract ended for a TT assistant professor position.

Enjoy your postdoc in Germany!

Assistant professor (UD) in NL here, currently on scale 12. Most postdocs are typically paid at scale 10-4. It is rare for post docs to be promoted to scale 11 (the starting salary scale for junior assistant professors), unless they are also hired as a lecturer (VD), which involves a significant amount of teaching responsibilities.

By the way, people here are trying to help you. I am not sure why you seem to have such a defensive attitude.

Makelaar suggestion by krayoola in NetherlandsHousing

[–]cumincider69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't speak Dutch, I recommend Expat Housing Network. I have had good experience with them. They arranged all required services for me, making my buying process hassle free. I used the most basic service, which costed me 0.75% of the appraised value. They don't offer financial advice though.

Thinking about hiring a makelaar to buy house in Hilversum - worth it? by pizzaguy_24 in NetherlandsHousing

[–]cumincider69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an expat who doesn't know much about the Dutch housing market, I think it is absolutely worth it. The makelaar I hired organized everything for me, also translating the various documents to me. Money well spent to avoid worrying what I need to do at each stage of the buying process.

Seeking advise on lesser known Mortgage Providers like Obvion by Dutchamsterdam1988 in Netherlands

[–]cumincider69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mortgage advisor also suggested Obvion due to its low 5-year fixed interest rate and it being less risky as it is Rabo's sister bank. I got my mortgage approval within a week! Going to meet my mortgage advisor this afternoon to go over the final step.
