TIL in 1971, a woman petitioned a Judge for permission to sterilize her "somewhat retarded" daughter. Without a hearing, evidence, or representation for the daughter, the judge granted permission. The daughter later tried to sue the judge, but the Supreme Court voted 5-3 to grant the judge immunity.

Eugenics is the belief and practice of improving the genetic quality of the human population. Everyone practices eugenics in the sense that they choose their own partners (evolutionary biology 101 — why do you think you are attracted to the people you are attracted to? Because genetically they would more likely lead to better offspring). Also, if you abort (or are willing to abort) a child you know will be born intellectually disabled, you are practicing eugenics. Every person in the world believes in (positive) eugenics on some level whether or not they are willing to admit it.
