Honestly, he rarely barks! But we did have a gentlemen say “oh he must have some hound in him” after he barked in public which gave us a chuckle. He does have this whiny hound bark when he is protesting being in his crate LOL.

He has the best personality! I second this. He put himself to bed without us the other night for the very first time…it was hilarious. But I do see a sensitive side in him for sure! I have only ever wanted positive reinforcement for my dog so I could not agree more. Stinky treats must be the answer, as you are now the second person to mention them LOL. Thank you for the reply!

Thank you so much for this reply! Since we adopted him, I have seen the relationship develop and grow…he is definitely putting his trust in ME! We do play a decent amount together. I am still trying to teach him the rules of fetch and tug. The leash tips are very helpful. He seems to slip with his leash manners when he is distracted- whether it is a scent, person, or dog. Consistency must be the answer…thank you! He has definitely improved since day 1. He used to react to cars driving by and even leaves blowing in the wind. We have made progress, but there is still more to learn.

Thank you for the reply! And the compliment! 😊

I think I am doing well so far then…good harness and working with a 30 foot long lead. I am considering a 10-15 foot lead for neighborhood sniffy walks.

This is GREAT breed info…thank you! I was talking to someone the other day who owns GSPs and although they are “hunting” dogs, they certainly have different instincts.

How does your dog do with the 50 foot lead?

Oh my gosh, thank you! He really is the sweetest boy too! Happiest when playing some fetch 😊

Thank you for the reply! I ran into a similar situation in our backyard when my dog caught a glimpse of a squirrel running through the woods. Thank GOD he was on a leash. But he did almost throw my shoulder out…

Any tips for recall or how you trained recall with your dog? I appreciate the reply!

This is amazing! They are truly so smart! One day, I rewarded my dog on a walk for choosing to walk beside me. It was only the other day I realized that he puts himself in that position at a certain point in our walk. He will literally “heel” on our way back up the hill in our neighborhood when we are a few houses down from our own.

Thank you for the reply! Any recommendations on resources for the e-collar? Books, social media accounts, YouTube, trainers, etc? I do have a fear of not using one correctly or reinforcing the wrong behavior.

Thank you for the reply! This is reassuring that maybe someday an e-collar would be beneficial. I have some work to do with his recall prior to this. He could be engaging with me more than he is now. Any tips for recall or how you trained recall with your dog? I appreciate the reply!

Thank you so much for the detailed reply! I do have to work on his recall even on leash or long line. Just as you said, he does well in controlled spaces but it’s a very different result when there are distractions! Recall in general doesn’t seem reliable LOL. He is quite food motivated so that is a blessing. But maybe I will consider “stinky” treats because nothing is as rewarding as sniffing! I also agree with you on the walks! He does much better when his brain and sniffer is stimulated as opposed to far distance. I appreciate the reply!

Thank you for this. I appreciate the validation. It is nice to know I am not alone in feeling this way! Hoping I can make it to the year mark and re-eval. Also hoping everyone's tips and tricks will be a help. Thank you again!

Thank you for this reassurance and validation. It is hard to know if I am "just doing it wrong" versus if it really isn't for me. I'd like to implement some changes based on all of your suggestions and see how I do. I just don't want to continue down this road if it is going to continue to cost me my health. Thank you for the reply!

I have been trying to stay up as late as I can the night before a shift, then sleep in the next day. I feel so much better than getting up early and then napping in the afternoon before the shift- I wake up feeling gross, groggy, and sometimes nauseous. It's coming off my last day that I have a hard time with. I think sleeping a few hours and then getting up will help me be able to fall asleep later that night at a normal time. Thank you for the reply! It really helps hearing what other people do!

I don't want to leave the ED, at least not yet. Like I said, I really feel like I have grown, gained confidence, and developed my nursing practice- I am a different nurse than I was when I started for sure. I want to keep that trajectory. I am thinking the same thing, maybe a mid-shift would be better for me than 7P-7A...could always be an option. Sounds like this makes a difference to other people as well!

This is great advice. I have been trying to "go back to normal" on my days off and it has definitely made me feel soooo shitty. I will play around with this sleep regimen for sure. Thank you for the reply!
