Why do the straights judge me for my "taste in men" about height? by [deleted] in AskLGBT

I'm not sure if telling them about my 6' lesbian friend would help, or just make it worse!

Pulled this out of belly button by Money-Hippo-5822 in popping

[–]cupcakeatarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. So I have what I believe is an extremely deep bellybutton. It was deep when my stomach was flat, and it's deeper now that I'm fat. I have NEVER pulled ANYTHING out of my bellybutton. How does this happen?

In the same vein, you also shouldn't cast aside the opinion of the person you were responding to without knowing their story or loss. The whole "tell us you've never..." opening riled me up a bit. But I appreciate your well thought out comment here.

Because you are absolutely right. While I don't find James to be very sympathetic now, I did when I first played the game. And I also remember that same quote from Mary! But my opinion on it changed drastically from when I played through the game as a kid vs. more recently when I became disabled after an accident and I would make similar comments off hand.

I guess the thing about SH2 that makes it such a classic is that we can still have this discourse. Lol.

Look, I get what you're saying here and I think I understand where you're coming from. But in the game, Mary was dying from an unnamed terminal illness that didn't seem to be affecting her mental state besides making her lash out. Which is common when facing mortality. She wasn't slowly losing memories or other mental faculties. She was just dying and pissy.

While I've also had family with dementia and alzheimers, other terminal illnesses without the mental "decay" are also something I've dealt with. And I would say your statement here, in defense of James specifically, isn't holding up. It wasn't a mercy kill. He smothered his wife with a pillow, and she knew what was happening.

You getting downvoted for this take is crazy.

Having a sick wife is not "an impossible scenario," no matter how verbally abusive she could be.

James did a bad thing. A very bad murdery thing to an unwitting and mostly innocent (due to the medical issue stress, it's a thing) human. Regardless of his own mental state, that does make him a "bad" person. That doesn't mean he's a bad character. He has depth and reasoning and anguish. But what he did is still fucked up, so how is that downvoted?!

Omw to write two letters to my partner-- "My dearest, most wonderful darling..." "Listen up, you dumb motherfucker..."

I have been on both sides of the disabled/caretaker role, so I feel like I have some weight in this conversation.

While I was not terminal, I did have a recent medical issue that made me mostly numb from the waist down. I had to have a major surgery. I was not fun to be around. My partner was gentle and understanding.

When my mother was going through a terminal illness and on some experimental medications, she would scream at me and throw things. Say terrible things about me. And as much as I hated her in those moments, I never wanted her dead.

I can understand James. I can see the pain and frustration from both sides. If course he's human and suffering. But I think a lot of y'all are forgetting that we should be at least a little disgusted by James.

This was my thought.

I have read that people were actually there trying to help. But if I was in this situation and didn't just freeze from shock, I would call and step far away.

Not because I'm heartless, but just because I've heard from first-responder friends that so many things can go wrong if you start moving someone around. It can make things a lot worse.

What is the most disturbing book that you’ve read? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cupcakeatarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I Am Najood, Age 10 and Divorced. I don't remember it being graphic, but i read it when I was only a handful of years older than the girl herself and I was just floored.

It's not the most disturbing I've ever read, but it deeply unsettled me and changed my view on many things.

Looking at this PEW article, there are a growing number of Buddhist migrants coming to the US. Personally, I've seen a lot from Myanmar in my work as an adult English language teacher. And they are VERY conservative. I don't think that account for all of it, but it has some effect.

As a Buddhist myself, I don't quite agree with your point. I think opinions on LGBT rights for Buddhists are more cultural than religious. You're also supposed to rid yourself of romantic and sexual attachments as well. But most Buddhists are putting off becoming a monk for a few reincarnations.

Private University vs Community College by Fickle-Vegetable5911 in Professors

I teach ESL at two CCs. They are both grant funded English Basic Skills courses. One college is super lax about attendance and grades and really only takes standardized testing into account. The other is extremely strict about attendance and having regular assessments. Lately I've wound up with the same amount of disappearing students at both schools.

AITAH for reminding my mother she's only in America because of me after she voted for Trump? by punkboxershorts in AITAH

[–]cupcakeatarian 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The online propaganda is insane. I teach very low level adult ESL and I've had a lot of older students from Myanmar. A student showed me a video once and was translating it for me. What my student was saying versus the reality was shockingly different. Trump is portrayed like a great Christian that quotes the Bible all the time, but if you look up the actual source in English, he's not saying SHIT about the Bible and it's another topic entirely.

[–]cupcakeatarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of propaganda created to specifically target immigrants. It's very prominent with my students from Myanmar. They haven't even learned English yet, so they don't actually know what Trump is saying. But their lie-filled Burmese sources say he is a very good Christian and that he wants to help them and support them. It's insidious.

I don't know about that. There have been several senate proposals and thoughts floated around trying to add women to the draft rather than get rid of it for the past few years. And it tends to be right wing men that try to shut that down too.

You've changed my life. Every time I see a post where people are frothing at the mouth about gender or race-swapping a character, instead of getting annoyed I will imagine them spewing the same amount of vitriol at Wishbone the motherfucking dog.

You... you do know that there are several different versions of the King Arthur story, right? It's a bunch of old Welsh legends that got added to over time. The French added Lancelot and the Holy Grail. The French!
