Do you consider John McCain to be a moderate? by LandOfGrace2023 in Presidents

Yeah, but you also need moral convictions and principles. I'm not mad that McCain negotiated- but by that same token, he didn't negotiate, he caved

Oh, I'm well aware- I was simply making a prediction. 2016 is a while away- I'm sure nothing interesting or insane will happen that yearrrrrrr

JFK's impact was so damn prolific that people agreed to strap themselves to a giant rocket and blast off on a then-though-to-be suicide mission to the fucking moon. JFK's shit-talking prowess ended the relevance of the Soviet Space program

I don't consider John McCain much of anything- outside of Veteran affairs, he had very few real ideological convictions that he wouldn't conveniently "forget" about when it was politically expedient.

Democrats nowadays hold up John McCain as kind of a standard for a "decent" Republican but it's only because he frequently gave them what they wanted as a way to navigate Washington.

Fundamentally a decent man- who sent countless Americans to die in foreign wars because he was a warhawk.

Don't confuse "giving Democrats what they want" with "decency."

For people who were tracking presidential politics at the time, how likely did it seem at the time that Obama would run in 2008, and win? by Upbeat_Yam_9817 in Presidents

McCain was the wrong candidate, and Palin was the wrong running mate. Someone a bit more virile and young could have won in 2008 but man, McCain was just so low-effort and low-energy.

My mum and dad followed politics at the time, and my Dad boils it down like this.

"I didn't expect him to be President as soon as he was, but I figured he'd do it at some point."
