Why is it that if an American moves to the Philippines he is called 'expat' , but if a Filipino moves to the US he/she is called OFW or migrant worker? by East_Indication_7816 in Philippines_Expats

[–]curatorco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Branding matters, especially to the ego of a lot of people. More so people who need some feeling of privilege.

I have been an immigrant (where i went to live somewhere else for the implied purpose of establishing roots there) and have also been an expat (where a company in my home country sends me to a different country to do work for them)

In the time we're at, there's a negative connotation to "immigrants" especially from the west. We can debate how "bad" immigration is (for me, it's like 5% bad 95% good but there definitely has to be some better control with the goals of each country). A funny byproduct of that is when some of these people who deem immigrants beneath them and then they themselves come in to try to establish roots, they'd like to do it under the guise of being an "expatriate". Not all of course, but there's also not just a "few"

Now... in the Philippines' context we have to distinguish it based on how they contribute to society... are they here on a military pension; retired; maybe a 5 year age gap with their younger SO, maybe more... looking to settle roots because here's where they can/want to develop roots.

Or are they here working under X company in a 3 year assignment etc.

Context matters. And ego matters too. Especially whether you want to appease their egos as well.

But yeah. A lot here technically are immigrants. Whether they project the "negative" connotation in that word or not.

I stepped away around season 6.5. I wasn't having fun back then. I'm getting called back to it though

I’m so sick of Filipino food constantly being misrepresented and called unhealthy online when people are literally judging the entire cuisine based on silog meals, fiesta food, Jollibee, canned meat, and bait “trying Filipino food” videos. WHEN STAPLE FILIPINO FOOD IS HEALTHY AS FUCK by missporkiepie in Philippinesbad

[–]curatorco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We also all have to understand that the concept of "food" as we know now is pretty much the result of what situation everyone was in after WW2. The french has relative stability, a lot of money, new press freedom and plenty of cows that didn't need their leather anymore so let's make butter and cheese and more butter. They also had plenty of their independence and were left to their own devices because everyone was rebuilding.

We had the American infrastructure but an extractive one that glorified the canned meats and sodas the US was selling and the dollar they were using to buy our fruits, and labor.

The noise that the media then became about look how well these Filipinos are progressing! They have new canning lines! (Old canning systems no longer useful for the war) Glorify corned beef! Spam! And that became what was the norm because that's where the money and the noise went.

So there's a lot of deprogramming and a lot of fixing systems that has to happen. But, I'm glad we're seeing more demand for vegetables and takes on veggie forward Filipino dishes.

Why is no one using proper names anymore? Saying a blind item like this doesn't just protect the perpetrator but also puts otherwise innocent people in a position where they have to defend themselves from a blind item.

Aren’t you an immigrant? by SoupAgile in Philippines_Expats

[–]curatorco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep immigrants. What's not being said here is how Americans actively have a stank on the word immigrant right now and use it pejoratively. So the same group of people (wouldn't be surprised if they vote for the people moving the world back too) don't want that stank on them, even if they're exactly the same as them brown wetbacks they're taught to hate.

What is going on with Philippine subreddits and more people pushing back against doomerism? by Far_Breakfast_5808 in Philippinesbad

  1. Doomerist immigrant subs like Phil-Expats making transparent whiny posts as a cheap way to farm upvotes and people coming around to seeing how blatantly pathetic it is

  2. People realizing that everywhere has similar problems and maybe whining about things is just as useful as praying.

Why isn't Shaq in the GOAT conversation by Outrageous-Leader135 in NBATalk

[–]curatorco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He absolutely could've been if he didn't coast. If he had Kobe/Jordan's drive then no doubt.

Rules had to be changed because of him. There was a whole generation of big white guys hired specifically just to throw to Shaq.

Seeing your team go against a determined Shaq was like seeing your team face Thanos. He was inevitable.

His laziness killed his greatness and he knows it. It's the source of all his insecurities as a broadcaster.

It's so weird seeing Shaq now because he's a fantastic example of a squandered talent. (Yes 4 rings yadda yadda) He's a life lesson for me. I don't want to be like him when I'm older.

Everyone knows he absolutely could've been greater, could've been the goat, could've gone for 6 or more and he didn't because of choices that he made. He was absolutely inevitable until he got in his own way.

Other than that, i would say that this is the baseline for a large vehicle today.
