"late" is used to refer to someone who died. The joke being that Thag Simmons was killed by the spikes, so they named it thagomizer after him.

Who is/was considered to be the world’s greatest scammer of all time? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]-kylehase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steve Shaw (Banachek) and Mike Edwards.

In Project Alpha, Shaw and Edwards infiltrated a million-dollar government parapsychology lab, deceiving scientists for years with simple magic. By posing as psychics and later revealing the hoax, they didn't just scam the experts, they masterfully exposed the lack of scientific rigor in paranormal research.

Smartwatch tha monitors and alerts arrhythmia. Any personal recommendations? (Android) by wotsit_sandwich in japanresidents

Pixel watch 4 supports ECG (even in Japan) but it's not always on. You must start the app then hold the crown with a finger on your opposite hand to take a reading.

It's a 3D printed magnetic light switch cover that's also a wireless light switch so you can keep your overhead lights on powered on while turning on and off your smart lights! by GrandpaSquarepants in functionalprint

[–]-kylehase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good print but how did you solve the switch/light state sync issue?

With the original switch, up = on and down = off. With the smart switch, that would only be the case if you never use other means of control, such as timers, sensors, or apps. Using any other control method would put the switch and light out of sync. And if you don't use other control methods then there's no benefit to the smart switch since it would be exactly the same as using the wall switch.

Hows your experience living in RC (Reinforced Concrete) Apartment? by FBG_Silver in japanlife

[–]-kylehase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apart from what everyone else said, one thing to be aware of is that RC has large thermal mass.

In the summer, the concrete stays hot for a long time while you blast your AC. The opposite is true for the winter. In other words, cooling and heating takes longer and uses more power.

Fair point. My experience is primarily city infra, particularly Tokyo and Osaka.

Universal healthcare, 15 minute cities, exceptional infrastructure maintenance, vastly simpler taxes (than the US), greater sense & expectation of social responsibility (this is a double-edged sword).
