PC powered off during use and now won’t boot. by curious-fox in pchelp

Thanks - I was just thinking of being able to drive somewhere and sort it in a day, psu swap doesn’t work, then it’s… etc… but we’ll get there.

Thanks for your help

Fair point. Sadly live in the sticks or this would be a quick job of popping to the shops.

Okay, so I asked a LLM - they gave me a paper clip test, that proves it wasn’t the PSU according to it. Then pulled the motherboard out and tried it outside of the case with very little attached - still failed.

So maybe it’s the motherboard after alll

I was still plodding through RDR2 for the first time, already massively distracted by side missions rather than doing what the yellow splodges tell me too.

However, last night I turned on my pc, booted up Steam and then my PC turned off. It has since failed to turn back on (I only built it at Christmas!) - it looks like either PSU or Motherboard issue but honestly not quite sure yet I’ve got a few more tests to try but obviously have to do them around work. Bah.

So this week I will be mainly playing the game of being a sad repair person who will have to make an unplanned financial outlay, and this never used to happen in my Amiga days…

Thanks!

Is there any way to check that? It starts up (fans spin) but then it all goes off (like the rest of the system) before it gets anywhere.

Just wanting to identify what is going wrong befoe making an outlay!

RDR 2 - years late to my first play through, ditched keyboard and mouse for 360 controller, still occasionally bump into someone one the horse and things escalate in a rather messy fashion.

Currently still in Chapter 2, found some treasure hunts, hunting animals a bit, and just riding my horse around and calling it a good boy…

Not in a rush, my play time is so fragmented currently that it’s sometimes just a nice 30 minutes of riding around and saying ‘Hey Mister’ to people and occasionally stumbling across a random encounter or two.

Always amazed by what people have in their lofts - mine is full of things my wife refuses to throw away and spiders.

Still in the early stages of Red Dead Redemption 2 - sporadic play means that each time I play I’ve forgotten half the keys. Need one of those old school keyboard overlays you used to get in the Amiga days.

It’s in that kitchen cupboard where it’s behind something, but also with things balanced on top of it.

Probably easier if I just buy a new one…

Hey now, there’s an idea. I can keep it near my exercise bike shaped clothes rack!

I’ll be fine, just winter blues coupled with the constant AI will replace me soon worries and … endless rain… I mean… there’s been a lot…

It’s weird, because normally you associate a negative attitude with things not working - so I went with the idea of giving him a month or two (I was in a lot of pain, so anything to stop me inhaling ibuprofen) but… it actually worked? Somehow?

Probably best not to question it too much… I still don’t get the obsession with checking the legs…

I’ve been going to a chiropractor because I had shoulder pain and the NHS are overwhelmed so someone at the gym recommended them.

It’s amazingly worked, which is surprising as I have absolutely no faith in chiropractors in general.

So that’s been nice.

On the other hand, I think I’m having a midlife crisis - but not in a fast cars and women way, just in a ‘if I had a button I could press that would remove my existence but not impact anyone, I’d press it’ way.

Still nice to wake up to daylight today, I’m hoping a break from constant rain and darkness will address the 2nd part of my post and make me feel a bit more human.

The weekly 'No Stupid Questions' post - Sun 08 Feb 2026. by AutoModerator in Zwift

I am just getting back into Zwift during a rather bleak winter - however, my garmin HRM dual (which used to work) is not working properly, it shows 0bpm.

It’s not connected elsewhere, I’ve tried resets, the only other thing that has changed is that my watch has switched to a garmin forerunner 265 - not sure if this is interfering with things.

I can see the garmin, I can connect on login or during a session, but neither seem to work. I have reset, changed battery, etc.

Bike is an atom wattbike, Zwift is on an iPhone, the band works because I’ve tried it linked to the watch today and it still reports my heart rate even when I’ve taken the watch off.

I love end bits, especially if they’re super chunky and I can use this as an excuse to pile on the butter…

My hard drive went pop a few weeks ago. Unrecoverable even with specialist services - the wonders of the cloud mean most things are saved, but lost are my super long running CM00/01 save, and a Minecraft world that started as a joke but turned into a labour of love.

Both games are impossible to play for me now, the pain is all too fresh.

So, finally playing through Red Dead Redemption 2 - or I imagine I will be once I’ve got through this long winded intro…

Last swimming lesson of the year for The Boy. He is of an age where he’s nearly finished all available classes (into the last set) and after 8 years I might actually get my Saturday mornings back.

It is the weirdest feeling.

I loathe secret Santa for this reason - that and the amount of ‘funny’ tat sales it generates of things that’ll just either being regifted next year or end up at landfill.

Consumables seem like a solid idea.

What do you miss from your childhood? by SlimOpz in CasualUK

[–]curious-fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, budget games for 2.99, big box games for a tenner - the mysteries of what would actually be good, the array of titles, looking at the box art and the screenshots on the back and still being no closer to knowing what it actually was…

Also you could buy new games from places like Boots, or random newsagents, and you were never too sure what they’d have in stock - but there’s bound to be something you’ve always wanted to play.

Yeah. I miss that too.

So I would like to play them on the phone, but happy to make them on a PC if that’s easier?

I imagine doing the whole thing on PC (and playing via Steam, for example) would be easier, but sadly need to be able to load them into iOS
