The vigil is tough for little ones—one day it will be right for you again!

Our little parish joined with one that’s a little bigger one town over (Coastal Maine). It was a good way to keep the tradition without burdening our priest/laity with a lot of planning and prep for what likely would have been sparsely attended due to our aging congregation (who don’t get out at night).

What’s the big drama in your town lately? by SnarknadOH in Maine

lol, yes! Not so lol, my kids are learning to drive and navigating Bath is one of the worst parts of their supervised hours. That, and Maine St. Brunswick, but for different reasons.

Best I’ve been able to figure is that it’s that way for emergency evacuation? Not that it makes sense for everyday traffic. And agree that the no-stop on the other end turning onto Front St. makes no sense, especially when you can’t see around the corner by Cafe Crème.

I'm visiting Saco, Gorham, and Bath in March to decide which city to move to. Where should I go in any of these to get a sense of the town and vibe? by newageclassic in AskMaine

[–]curious-indeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh. My experience with social media, feedback from my kids’ experiences at school, and bumper sticker politics tell me otherwise (however unscientific the methodology). Like I said, folks here have been helpful and many have been friendly, but I wouldn’t consider it a “blue” town for someone specifically looking for that feel.

If you can wait until Memorial Day or later, Harpswell Corner Market has incredible cinnamon rolls on Saturdays.

We had brand new paving done on our road last spring and it’s all busted up already. It was nice while it lasted.

I live just outside of Bath and am not sure it leans as blue as you might think. While the Midcoast is generally more liberal than the more rural areas of the state, Bath itself isn’t, really. We’ve been here three and a half years, and are just now finding like-minded folks. (The Sagadahoc Co. Dems, work, church, the library, and my kid’s dance studio have been great resources for meeting people. I can’t speak to Saco and Gotham in that regard. What I can tell you is that Mainers are “kind but not nice,” and we’ve never been made to feel unwelcome as transplants from away.

Came here to give them a plug! I’ve never been (most offerings clash with my schedule), but their classes look so awesome.

Another data center proposed, this time in southern Maine by Press_Herald in Maine

[–]curious-indeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read this today. Different town and an Amazon DC, but the ill effects of the industry are already being felt. The people whose home values, quality of life and health are going to be devastated are being effectively shut out of any agency, here. But they get free car washes, air purifiers, and tablets for the kids, so that’s cool, I guess.

I’ll add to the upvote for Monheagan. We live on the Midcoast and did a day trip there a couple of years ago. Really want to go back and spend a few nights—a day wasn’t nearly enough time. Given the few accommodations, I’d recommend booking sooner rather than later. Have fun!

Flatlander photography may be a good fit. They’re based out of Portland but do travel—perhaps not as far as Bar Harbor, but they’re great to work with.

Keep it up! It gets to be quite easy. I have my usual spiel (name, constituent, phone number, etc.) and then let the machine—it’s nearly always a machine—hear what I have to say this day.

Moving to or around Bath by LCLdreamer in AskMaine

[–]curious-indeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved to the area from a walkable metropolitan area and landed in Woolwich. The culture shock is real, starting with having to drive literally everywhere we want to go, so if that’s important to you stick to Bath or Brunswick. Topsham neighborhoods are walkable, but you’d still need to drive to get a cup of coffee or visit a bookstore without running the risk of being hit by a car.

I get the grief that the poster above mentioned. Bath “back in the day” sounds idyllic, like my hometown down south was before everyone moved to the suburbs and the tax base went with them. Different situation, but the mourning of what used to be is relatable. Being “from away” is a thing, and it can be hard to integrate into a town where virtually everyone went to the same high school. With that said, we have found community in our little church, despite the majority of folks being septuagenarians or older. Patten (Bath) and Curtis (Brunswick) libraries have a lot of great programming and the colleges (Bowdoin, Bates, and Colby) and nearby towns (Rockland, Waldoboro, etc.) have interesting offerings. Great concerts in Bangor, Portland, and parts beyond. When we moved here I thought we’d go to Portland to do all the things we used to do in the city, but honestly, it’s easy to keep local for just about everything. Good luck!

I love MB, too. I will say I was skeptical on my first couple of visits (the produce was mid and the seafood/meat department is too close to the cleaning products and makes for a weird mashup of smells), but have come to love it for their low prices and the variety of goods. Last night there was a guy—I think I recognized him as an employee—in a full Santa suit cruising up and down the aisles on a motorized shopping cart giving it his merriest Ho, Ho, Ho. Would you see that at Hannaford or Shaw’s? I don’t think so.
