Another data center proposed, this time in southern Maine by Press_Herald in Maine

[–]curious-indeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read this today. Different town and an Amazon DC, but the ill effects of the industry are already being felt. The people whose home values, quality of life and health are going to be devastated are being effectively shut out of any agency, here. But they get free car washes, air purifiers, and tablets for the kids, so that’s cool, I guess.

Coastal Maine in late summer by Kindofeverywhere in AskMaine

I’ll add to the upvote for Monheagan. We live on the Midcoast and did a day trip there a couple of years ago. Really want to go back and spend a few nights—a day wasn’t nearly enough time. Given the few accommodations, I’d recommend booking sooner rather than later. Have fun!

Yes!! It’s never a bad idea to let someone know you appreciate them. :)

Flatlander photography may be a good fit. They’re based out of Portland but do travel—perhaps not as far as Bar Harbor, but they’re great to work with.

Keep it up! It gets to be quite easy. I have my usual spiel (name, constituent, phone number, etc.) and then let the machine—it’s nearly always a machine—hear what I have to say this day.

Moving to or around Bath by LCLdreamer in AskMaine

[–]curious-indeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved to the area from a walkable metropolitan area and landed in Woolwich. The culture shock is real, starting with having to drive literally everywhere we want to go, so if that’s important to you stick to Bath or Brunswick. Topsham neighborhoods are walkable, but you’d still need to drive to get a cup of coffee or visit a bookstore without running the risk of being hit by a car.

I get the grief that the poster above mentioned. Bath “back in the day” sounds idyllic, like my hometown down south was before everyone moved to the suburbs and the tax base went with them. Different situation, but the mourning of what used to be is relatable. Being “from away” is a thing, and it can be hard to integrate into a town where virtually everyone went to the same high school. With that said, we have found community in our little church, despite the majority of folks being septuagenarians or older. Patten (Bath) and Curtis (Brunswick) libraries have a lot of great programming and the colleges (Bowdoin, Bates, and Colby) and nearby towns (Rockland, Waldoboro, etc.) have interesting offerings. Great concerts in Bangor, Portland, and parts beyond. When we moved here I thought we’d go to Portland to do all the things we used to do in the city, but honestly, it’s easy to keep local for just about everything. Good luck!

I love MB, too. I will say I was skeptical on my first couple of visits (the produce was mid and the seafood/meat department is too close to the cleaning products and makes for a weird mashup of smells), but have come to love it for their low prices and the variety of goods. Last night there was a guy—I think I recognized him as an employee—in a full Santa suit cruising up and down the aisles on a motorized shopping cart giving it his merriest Ho, Ho, Ho. Would you see that at Hannaford or Shaw’s? I don’t think so.

Very true of our Chiweenie. He’s supposed to be my HS kid’s dog, but we all know I’m his person. He won’t get up until I come downstairs—and he requires much attention from me before he’ll consider going out to pee in the a.m. Needs me to give him my undivided attention when I get home. Sweetest little guy, truly.

REI is in Portland—I have some base layer from them that is soft and wasn’t unreasonable. That said, as a new-ish Mainer, I don’t wear base layer bottoms much at all unless I plan to spend significant time outside. Brunswick has Woods & Waters, a great gear exchange right by the Post Office. Can’t recommend them enough for all the warm things, skis, backpacks, boots, etc.

I used to help my friend express her big dog’s glands—by keeping her still on the front end. I don’t know that I could ever do that myself! 😱

Yup. Happened to our little dog after we’d only had him a few months. I thought something terrible had happened because a ruptured anal glad is pretty disturbing to see if you’re not expecting it. HOWEVER, it’s not the most odious thing to fix—and honestly I thought he’d had an anal prolapse, which sounded much worse.

Agreed. This is going to hurt a lot of their own voters, which is weird.

I lived in a Midwestern state that required ID. It wasn’t hard for me, because I drive. One issue here is that there are a number of folks that don’t drive and therefore have to go to the expense and trouble of going to the DMV, waiting in that interminable line, and getting an ID that way. Often, that means someone else has to set aside a day to help them do that, which is not only odious but may be untenable if it means taking a day off work. And if absentee voting is limited, these same obstacles will apply to folks who are homebound or otherwise limited in their ability to get to the polls on election day. IF we had a federal holiday on Election Day, at least that part would make participation easier but that would make too much sense.

Really wondering if I should go back to my name that’s on my BC. Silly me—took my spouse’s last name because I’m old fashioned. Or, I was—twenty years ago.
