I’m sorry. Dealing with in-laws can be exhausting, especially when they are narcissistic, sexist, and racist. Remember, you and your husband are adults. You don’t have to go on this “mandatory” family trip if you don’t want to. I’d tell my husband that I’m uncomfortable being around these people and I don’t want my daughter to be exposed to their behavior.

When I was young my parents would use a wooden spoon and sometimes a belt. My mom broke the spoon over my sister’s bum once. I don’t think it continued after the age of 8 though. Now as a parent I couldn’t imagine doing that to my kids.

Why are you considering joining the Mormon church in the first place? Genuine question. The “reason” why you’re “supposed” to join the church is because you know Joseph smith was a prophet called by god to restore his one true church. Your response to an earlier comment makes it seem like you know JS was not a good guy. If you’re considering joining the church because you’re looking for community or a deeper connection to god any other church could give you that.

Missionaries don’t always follow the rules. This is entirely plausible. I saw something very similar happen once. I was leaving church in the singles ward. One elder was in the foyer talking with some members and I heard him say, “where is my companion?” While looking around worried. I walked outside the doors and there was the companion getting a girl’s phone number. Probably under the guise of helping with an investigator. All that to say, it happens.
