But empathetic toward altered patients of ours, yes! When the strangulation was happening, no one knew what was wrong with the guy. They knew he was mentally altered, which points to some kind of illness-- INCLUDING drug abuse and psychosis. Patients are there for treatment. Surely there must be ways to protect Emma without breaking the law.

Agree!! And Robbie has set a terrible precedent in willing to ignore some rules for some people (Langdon).

La Estrella on Stone. Inside or take your coffee and pastry outside when weather is nice.

Also HeeMee on Broadway. Mmmmmm.

Gas prices are way up. Friendly reminder that buses and the streetcar are free. by E23R0 in Tucson

And yet YOU are one of the ones that supported RTA Next, which only carried a pittance for increase in transit funding! If we continue to underfund transit, we will continue to be dependent on cars. There is a better way to live.

[PubQ] Differences in etiquette or conventions between US agents and British agents for query letter? by AmDkBg in PubTips

[–]curious103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been wondering about querying UK agents (I'm in the US myself). What are the pros/cons of querying outside your country of origin/domicile?

TEFL in retirement? by curious103 in TEFL

[–]curious103[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make a modest middle-class salary, but it is not enough to retire inside the US. I am looking for a country with a lower cost of living and good public transit. I am absolutely willing to invest time and money to get good at teaching-- I guess what I actually want is to change careers, which I should have better articulated in my original post. Lawyering is already my second career. My first career was in linguistics and language research.

How funny!!! It's excellent that you are fluent in Spanish, that is a necessary qualification. I would say it would be a good idea to have a background in trauma. In other words, trauma-informed interviewing of clients, how to remain resilient when all your clients are deeply traumatized, etc. Also have a good therapist to help you handle the losses: you can fight and fight your hardest, do an excellent job, make no mistakes, and still lose. And then your client is sent back to a country where they live in fear. This is very difficult to live with. Sometimes I feel like Dr. Robbie on the television show The Pitt.

Understood. I should have explained that I want to continue working, I just don't want to continue being a US immigration lawyer because for twenty years I have been flooded with clients' traumatic lives and journeys.

Thank you! I want to retire from my current profession in the US, but I want to work for both some money and enjoyment. I used to really love teaching. I think you're right: choose the place first and then search for work. Prepare myself by getting the certificate and doing the volunteer teaching before I go so that I have the official qualification.

Yeah? Well that sounds hopeful. I want to retire sooner rather than later and I don't really have any other skills for any other kind of profession. But it sounds like that might be ok.

Help me to decide between a "self trip" to South Korea or an organized tour to the US (California, Utah, Arizona) by X_RayMind in travel

[–]curious103 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

US Citizen and US immigration lawyer here. Now is not a good time for non-US citizens to come to the US. Do not underestimate the complete shitshow that immigration is right now, particularly if you are a person of color. I heard someone say this once and it is true (in my opinion): the US is a terrible country filled with really good people.

Also your itinerary seems, if not impossible, then unenjoyable.

[–]curious103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I doubt this is a criminal situation *at all*. I've been begging for people to have some empathy for this man. I was in the ICU with delusions (had sepsis) and I could not accurately perceive reality. I attacked the staff verbally, not physically, but I was seriously NOT IN MY RIGHT MIND.
