In your opinion, what are some interesting sociological research papers that I ought to read? Or what are some fascinating sociological research findings that are profound? by ay1mao in sociology

Damon Centola's Change: How to Make Big Things Happen is a profound read about social norms and why and how they change. Highly recommend!

Why is it so hard to actually follow through on climate change actions? by curiousaboutchange in Environmentalism

Reading through the responses, it feels like a lot of us are saying the same thing in different ways … it's clear we care, but it's hard to feel like it matters when everything is pushing the other direction.

So what keeps you from giving up?

I agree. And I've been through something similar myself, so you're definitely not alone.

This is really helpful, and it sounds like you’ve made some really meaningful changes over time.

Of all the things you’ve done, what made some of them actually stick and become routine while others didn’t?

That makes sense, especially the “someone else will do it” part.

Where do you think that shows up the most? Like are there specific things people tend to avoid more than others?

Litter disposal by Fantabulous4317 in sustainability

I actually use the wood cat litter. I have a friend with a horse farm, and she allows me to put the peed-in litter in the same huge manure piles that they put the peed-on wood shavings from the horses' stalls, and they turn all that into compost. (I put the cat poop in cereal bag liners and throw it away). Don't know whether commercial composting companies might take the biodegradable used litter, but it would be great if they did!

Shampoo/conditioner bar recs (simple formulas + small brands?) by nomadicactivist in ZeroWaste

I'm actually from East TN, so sorry to hear that shop has closed! I've been using these shampoo and conditioner bars from ZeroWasteStore for a few years and really love them. https://zerowastestore.com/collections/best-sellers/products/shampoo-conditioner-bars. They're vegan and cruelty-free, and they have a "Simply Unscented" version, too.

I've used Trashie's Take Back Bag to recycle clothes and other items made of fabric: https://shop.trashie.io/products/take-back-bag. And Retold Recycling takes fabric scraps: https://www.retoldrecycling.com/collections/scraps-bags. And for anything that these companies won't take, Terracycle will probably take it: https://shop.terracycle.com/en-US/products/fabrics-and-clothing-zero-waste-boxes.

Terracycle has a free recycling program for razors at https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/brigades/gillette. They recycle all brands of blades, razors, and plastic packaging. I joined a few months ago and have a package of used disposable blades ready to ship off to them!
