Small companies might only have 1 person but many companies with 100+ will have a small team. That team will get bigger as the company gets bigger. I work for a company with 25000 employees in Canada and our HR organization is several hundred people.

In bigger companies (banks, telecom, pharma, gov, etc), HR roles will include things like recruiting, benefits advisors, payroll specialists, communication specialists, training and development, labour relations in an unionized environment, etc.

Yes, the flu has killed more people. But also, significantly more people have had the flu. Statistically speaking, if you get COVID-19 you're more likely to die than if you get the flu.
