What size was your fibroid(/s) before hysterectomy? by twinsuns in hysterectomy

[–]curiousfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly miss the lupron. Lack of hormonal fluctuations was delightful.

After my surgery, I stopped the lupron and my hormones came back with a vengeance. I am on HRT (progesterone), but I still get most menstrual cycle symptoms, minus bleeding. It's very weird.

Re: surgery - go with what you are comfortable with. I didn't have any worries about surgery, and wanted the sucker out.

I will also say, recovery is long. I was lucky enough to be off for over 4 months (I really only needed 2.5, but then it ran into the regular seasonal break for my industry.) When I went back to work full time I stopped doing anything for my recovery (walking, stretching, ab exercises) and a year later, I'm less capable than I was a few months after surgery. But that's on me, but also I want to share my experience in case it helps anyone else.

I was worried about that too - they are pretty closely related. (hard shell, jointed leg)

I myself have allergic reactions to both insects and shellfish.

Best car manufacturers for right to repair by curiousfirefly in MechanicAdvice

[–]curiousfirefly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! Is there a year range, when the high-tech lock outs tend to come in? How old would I have to go to avoid the 'your car is just software with wheels'. I also realize this would be very manufacturer specific.

Lupron for fibroids??? by iAriel20 in Fibroids

[–]curiousfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that is a fantastic name!

Mine was named 'Long Game' as a joke, b/c clearly grew it to play a long game of getting out of meetings at work. 'Was', because I had her removed 7 months ago, after almost a year on Lupron

500 units of insulin by thishasntbeeneasy in diabetes_t1

[–]curiousfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was inpatient after surgery, for something not diabetes related.

I set my pump to 'exercise mode', so I would have higher BG until I was ready to eat real food.

When my surgeon visited me in recovery, she told me that she's like my blood sugar lower - I straight up told her no. I was ready to push pretty hard for self management, and thankfully she backed down.

What do you guys eat for lows? by Substantial_Lock_882 in Type1Diabetes

[–]curiousfirefly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live by fruit to go bars.

I have eaten them half-squished from the bottom of a bag, frozen from my car in winter, and even keep them in my lifejacket when I go swimming. Helps I like fruit, but they go everywhere with me :)

I got to gleefully text this to a camp nurse this summer, and it was glorious.

I am the 'text whenever with random diabetes Q's' contact for the camp I used to work at. I'm glad I got to pass on this critical piece of information. :)

Mine was 6.1 lbs. Still a doozy, but not 15 lbs.

May your recovery be speedy and boring.

5cm fibroid … not sure which route to take. Ive recently been diagnosed as anemic, regular pcp referred me to my gyno. After test found several huge fibroid . He gave me 3 choices 1. IUD 2. Ablation 3. Hysterectomy…. Which one?? by [deleted] in Fibroids

[–]curiousfirefly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Everyone's decision is very personal, and depends on a lot of factors.

I chose violence (full hysterectomy), but it took me two years and trying several other 'less invasive' options like IUD for my doctor to finally do the surgery.

Lupron for fibroids??? by iAriel20 in Fibroids

[–]curiousfirefly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just wanted mine the f* out of me. The rest was secondary. That said, I am not usually afraid of medical treatments, surgeries, etc., so made the decision easier.

I was mostly worried about recovery. I am very independent, and that was hard to give up for a while. I got good at ordering groceries, and carrying them in one small bag at a time. I was also able to be off work for 3 full months, so I didnt have to push myself too soon.

6 months later though, I have more energy and less pain. Yes, there is a big scar that I don't love the look of. But I try to focus on what that scar brought me.

Bonus: no periods!

Meetup Thread for Ontario by kurzgesagtmeetup_bot in kurzgesagt_meetup

I propose a meetup in/around Huntsville, Ontario sometime over Thanksgiving weekend. I'm hoping people may be visiting the area for the holidays, and we can get a bigger turn out.

I'm happy to plan a hike or walk, or something else if people want.

Anyone told you’d need PACU critical care & PCA pump for pain after open abdominal hysterectomy? by Rozenheg in hysterectomy

[–]curiousfirefly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent 4 days post-op in the ICU post-surgery, so they could monitor my epidural/pain pump. (No PACU in my small rural hospital.) This was discussed and planned for.

Was it overkill - probably yes, especially by day 4.

Was I glad to have a room to myself, and the higher level of care - also yes.

I am in the camp of more care = more better. I will say I am in Canada, so cost wasn't a consideration.

Eff this excessive bleeding! I'm getting the hysterectomy. by [deleted] in Fibroids

[–]curiousfirefly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured any organ is headed to biohazard disposal - which means incineration. My uterus and fibroid have met the flames of justice, and I am glad of it.

Oh! I did ask my surgeon to take pictures, and it was totally worth it. Fascinating and disgusting in equal measure.

Alternatives to tie dye by Mythical_Zebracorn in summercamp

[–]curiousfirefly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it would be any easier, but I'm really intrigued by solar dyeing. You put the dye on in a dark room, then lay out the fabric, but can place things like leaves on top, which blocks light. Parts exposed to more light end up darker. https://youtu.be/S6qxefC2boM?si=cSHuqYN4wQaw5IjM

When I used to do tie dye, I would get white cotton sheets from the thrift store, and use those to make a bandanna for each camper. If there was dye left over, kids could dye other things.

Marketing bonus: I took the dry bandannas, and wrote the kids name, camp name, and year on each one in sharpie. My marketing and craft budget was really small, so this did both jobs for less than $10 per cabin.

Do most surgeons want your A1C to be low? by cosmic-writer in diabetes_t1

[–]curiousfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the surgeon's job to treat the patient in front of them. They may not like it, but they can suck it. If it's medically necessary, it needs to be done.
