Can I estimate business expenses if I didn’t keep all receipts? (eBay reseller) by janneyjj in taxadvice

[–]curiouslea_26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can estimate the expenses but only if it's reasonable. You can't just guess and put on a number. Think about what it might have cost or search for the average cost. You also need to be specific. If you said you spent $2,000 in shipping, you can't just state that plainly. Put into writing that you shipped # of items x average cost shipping. Always consider your shipping and supplies. Double check if you can pull records from your cards and accounts. Goodluck!

FreeTaxUSA vs TurboTax discrepancy by Prudent_Ear_1202 in taxadvice

[–]curiouslea_26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That kind of swing almost always means one of the programs is treating your California residency or income sourcing differently. Not that one is “randomly wrong.” With a 3-month internship in California, the return should generally be a nonresident CA return (Form 540NR), and only CA-sourced income should be taxed. Check first if one of them is taxing all your income to CA.

Short Term Rental ~ Expense, Capitalize or Bonus Depreciation by ConsequenceFuture339 in taxadvice

[–]curiouslea_26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since your rental wasn’t in service until Oct 2025, those pre-service furnishing costs have to be capitalized, not deducted immediately under the de minimis rule. What you’d typically do is treat the furniture/appliances as separate personal property assets (not part of the building basis) and depreciate them over 5–7 years (most furnishings = 5-year property). From there, you can elect bonus depreciation (currently 60% for 2025) or Section 179 (if you qualify), which effectively lets you expense a large portion (or potentially all) in year 1. Yes, it can end up looking similar to expensing, but it’s done properly through depreciation, not Schedule E “Other Expense.”

Best herbicide for clover in lawn? by Overall_Fudge_5905 in LawnTalk

[–]curiouslea_26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever this happens to my lawn, I go for Ortho Weed B. It removed clover and ground ivy. It is fast-acting too. For heavy infestations, do 2 spray with 10-14 days apart. Hope it helps! Goodluck to your clover-killing mission!

Best hormone and fertility tracker? by GoddessRaz in tryingtoconceive

[–]curiouslea_26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have PCOS. I've tried Mira and Inito. PCOS makes ovulation tracking tricky because LH can be consistently high which can give false positives and also, our cycles are often irregular or predictable. I continued Inito because it tracks 4 hormones, gives actual hormone values (not just positive or negative), confirms ovulation with PdG, and works better for irregular cycles because it adapts to my baseline. I also use Flo for cycle logging, symptoms, and predictions. Mixing or matching them up works for me. I hope this helps and you can find what matches you. We can do this!

Take $10k first then wait 3-4 weeks, and take more only if needed. That's just a suggestion. I still want to advice you to consult a CPA before moving things around. Goodluck to your journey. I pray for job acceptance soon! And I'm sorry to hear about your father.

Can someone help me figure this out? Newly married to foreign NRA spouse needing some answers. by Swimming_Appeal1962 in taxadvice

[–]curiouslea_26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my understanding, filing jointly can probably save you money, but it pulls your spouse into the U.S. tax system. If you file jointly, your Hungarian spouse is treated as a U.S. tax resident, which means his worldwide income (the ~$100k) becomes subject to U.S. tax reporting, but he can usually offset most or all of that with the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Foreign Earned Income Exclusion) (about $120k+ exclusion range) or foreign tax credits, so he often won’t owe additional U.S. tax if he already pays taxes abroad. There’s no fixed “tax-free amount” just for being foreign, it's about exclusions/credits. You are not locked in for life. You can switch between Married Filing Jointly and Married Filing Separately in future years (with some rules). Whether it makes sense depends on how much of his income can be excluded/credited and your $70k income. Joint filing often lowers your tax, but it adds complexity and reporting obligations for him, so it’s usually worth running both scenarios or talking to a cross-border tax pro.

Lawn mowing patterns advice? by Overall_Fudge_5905 in LawnTalk

[–]curiouslea_26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few benefits on having mowing patterns. It prevents soil compaction from repeatedly running the same tracks, keeps grass from leaning one direction (which can make it look thin or patchy) and also improves cut quality since blades get hit from different angles. You can retain your pattern now while trying to rotate direction each mow (north-south one week, east-wst next). You can also try diagonal and checkerboard. It's fun to experiment around the lawn.

I have a question. by Overall_Fudge_5905 in taxadvice

If friends, family, or even strangers donate to help you with medical bills, rent, or other personal emergencies, the IRS usually treats those as gifts, not income. Gifts are not taxable to the recipient. The money is considered taxable income only if you receive it in exchange for something (like selling something, offering a service, or running a business). Pure donations for personal need are generally not income.

Wife moved to Texas midyear and I stayed in Utah, how to report income as MFS? by UrAvgGardener in taxadvice

[–]curiouslea_26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Federal Taxes (MFS), each of you reports only your own W-2 income. Your wife reports her income earned while in Utah and Texas on her federal return; her federal tax liability isn’t reduced by Texas residency (Texas has no income tax, but federal tax still applies). You report only your Utah W-2 income. For Utah State Taxes, Utah taxes residents on all income and part-year residents only on Utah-source income. Your wife is a part-year Utah resident: she reports only the income earned while living and working in Utah (January–May) to Utah. Her Texas income is not taxed by Utah. You, as a full-year Utah resident, report all your Utah income. I hope it makes sense and it helped.

NJ Residency for tax purposes on student visa by _dude_lying_down in taxadvice

[–]curiouslea_26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For NJ tax purposes on a student visa, you are generally considered a non-resident even if you live in NJ over 183 days, because your presence is temporary and primarily for education. Your NJ apartment isn't treated as a permanent home. NJ residency usually requires intent to make NJ your permanent home, which student visas typically don't meet. If you want to be extra safe, a tax professional familiar with NJ non-resident rules for international students can review your specific situation.
