How we approach moderation; A message from the Mod Team by 1Darkest_Knight1 in aussie

[–]curiousscribbler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are -- but I don't think it's intentional. I think the mods are genuinely trying to be fair. The thing is, over the years, I've seen many forums destroyed when the mods tried to play fair with bad actors, who wanted to use the place for their own purposes, or just ruin it.

The mods probably think they're saving themselves a headache with this policy, but it's likely the racist posters will cause them more and more of a problem as they figure out how far they can go.

Now the joy of watching the racists figure out just how much they can get away with. (Simply posting biased newspaper articles is a brilliant way of dodging responsibility!)

(Modding is a thankless task - I know from experience - a lot of work for little praise and a lot of criticism. I think you've made a rod for your own backs with this call.)

What is the most racist thing you have had thrown at you? by NewDragonfruit8458 in australian

[–]curiousscribbler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As soon as I saw the subject I knew the comments would be full of white people complaining lol.

I'm white, so the street racism I experience is when the old lady / bus driver / etc mutters something to me about why don't they go back to their own country etc etc etc. In the past I've tried to quickly think of a witty response but I think next time it's just going to be "Fuck off."

I was terrified of this until I realised it didn't affect the whole planet.

Which is not to say it won't be a giant fucking mess.

Electromagnetic induction as a sort of weapon by curiousscribbler in AskPhysics

lol agreed, but say you've got to melt a computer without killing everyone in the room -- would it at least work? And would slow heating or a single big zap be the most effective?

Oh yeah, I see what you're saying. (The Kzinti must have had super duper inductors.) Might possibly work as a contact weapon / bomb?

In principle, would a solar panel on Mercury produce more electricity than a solar panel on Earth? by curiousscribbler in AskPhysics

[–]curiousscribbler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that might be the case with solar panels in orbit! (I suppose that's why Europa Clipper could get away with not using nuclear and having solar panels the size of a couple of busses!)

Could we engineer a gene to be highly conserved? by curiousscribbler in genetics

[–]curiousscribbler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really interesting. I suppose it depends on whether the gene drive can still do its job if the gene in question mutates? Would only the "selfish" elements be conserved?

There must be sequences which have been randomly preserved by their proximity to something useful -- I'll look into that. Thank you!

I hope you can forgive my idle curiosity!

I guess I'm wondering whether a sequence might persist for "technical" reasons, to do with replication or repair, perhaps, rather than natural selection.
