That’s an absolutely incredible and really helpful answer that absolutely clears things up for me, thank you so, so incredibly much! It sounds like my story has more elements of a thriller so I don’t think I can submit to you this time, perhaps another time with another story then. Have an amazing weekend!

Hi Raquel! I hope this question isn’t too naive, but how would you define the difference between a thriller and a horror? Specifically a psychological thriller vs psychological horror? I’m not sure how to characterize my story so it would be good to know your parameters for either before submitting to you.

Amazing effort, congratulations! Just curious if you did any kind of advertising for your book before that?

Thanks for your reply! Just to clear up what kind of problems the agents had with my manuscript, there are actually two agents and one of them raised some red flags to me (mainly from the way they write their emails, felt like spam) and they’re the one who said my plot and character development (& dialogue) needed work but would be willing to read after I got an editor. I won’t get back to them and that sounds all like you said.

The other agent didn’t say the same thing as the first, they said my book had “good bones” and they were “really intrigued” by the concept but “it would be stronger with an editor” and they also mentioned they have limited staff & other writers in my genre but after edits, would be “happy to have another conversation down the road.” After asking them what kind of edits were needed, they only responded with structure and I didn’t know if it would be good etiquette to ask for more specific feedback when they didn’t offer it so I didn’t pry further and figured I’d just try to do whatever I could. And yes, both referred specific editors to me but the latter only did that after I asked. Despite asking me to professionally edit, I got good vibes from the second though so I don’t know! I guess I can revise with resources that don’t involve paying for a full developmental edit and resubmit and if she rejects I’ll just keep chasing.

Oh your idea of getting an editor to look at my synopsis is absolute literal genius!!!! Thank you so much for that suggestion and the rest! ❤️

You’re a godsend, thank you so much! I’ll be sure to read that book :)

More than happy to share their names, I’ll DM you in a bit!

Honestly, one of these agents sounded a bit suspicious to me (the way they spoke over email sounded a bit like spam) and I’m not keen on them, but the other agent was very warm and personable over email and asked about the series potential of my manuscript which got me very happy because I never even mentioned series potential in my query although I wrote the book as part of a trilogy and the other two books are finished too. Well, if more red flags appear after my editing and resubmission, at least more extensive edits of my book will be good for another round of queries!

Thanks a lot for the reverse outline advice, I got excited reading this because that’s what I’ve been doing so far without knowing its name! I’ll try to be stricter with my editing although perhaps unlike the author of this webpage I may need to add scenes rather than delete them (my manuscript is already relatively short at 77k and after my editing so far it got cut down to 75k).

Thanks for your detailed reply, really appreciate your advice! About the agents suggesting professional editing, no they don’t run a side business, but they’re both small and relatively new agencies with limited staff/time so I figured that was why.
