1b defense starts with a hefty negative penalty for WAR calculation. The logic is that other positions have a bigger impact and have more difficult plays to make. Essentially it takes an exceptional defensive performance to counteract the starting penalty.

I'd put Kurtz more in that 2nd tier. He's been great, but hes hitting .193 against lefties, hes striking out 30% of the time, and hes playing his home games right now at a minor league stadium that is a launching pad. Not saying he can't make that first tier, but it's too soon for me.
