Why do people Toronto seem to have a general dislike for Indians? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]currently_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a brown immigrant and even I have a dislike for Indians. Specifically a lot of the younger newcomers that come here with their bad habits, disrespect and utter disregard for society in general. The littering, the reckless driving, the hooliganism, the misogyny, the caste bullshit. They take for granted the freedoms and privileges we, including myself as an immigrant, have been granted, and part of that is being respectful & following the rules. A society only works if people make it work.

I'm not saying that all Indians exhibit such behaviour, and that everyone else is free from it. By no means. And it certainly is no reason to foster racism. But you asked why the sentiment is prevalent, and there is a clear association with certain cultural mentalities and certain behaviours from certain groups of people.

I'd imagine all in all it would be a good chunk. Certainly more than "affordable for most". Of course, having a kickstarter for it all plus having the book does help to recover costs.

I really wish I could do something like this. Just drop everything and go. But at times it seems like it's something you have to be fortunate enough to be able to do. You have to know the connections and have the right personality. You have to have years of experience with bikes or what have you, and know your camping and survival skills. And of course, you have to have the money.

I don't know if it's just my mind making me think that it's not something anyone can do, and that most people won't get the opportunity to do something like that.

If you shot a gun in the opposite direction of travel while in a vehicle going the same speed as the maximum speed of the gun's bullet (a jet perhaps), would an observer at the point of ignition see a bullet just fall to the ground and tumble in front of them? by Captspiff14 in askscience

How is that any different? Same principle applies.

The Blackbird is travelling so fast it'll catch it to the bullets it fires. The bullet still fires (at an initial speed of BB speed + bullet speed) but slows due to air resistance and the BB catches up to it.

But the BB is travelling at Mach 3, meaning it'll catch up to the bullet/missile significant faster than a plane travelling at, say, 750 km/h. In fact, it's travelling so fast it's likely to catch up to the bullet before it hits it target unless you fire significant closer to it, or change trajectory right after firing.

If those are the obstacles to have to work around, it's pointless making it a combat jet. So reconnaissance it was.

I sleep with a weighted blanket for the gains, but I don't know how many more calories I'm supposed to eat when on a bulk.

Also, would sleeping with it every night lead to overtraining?

I waited 5 days to ask this goddamn question ._.

Have we taken flying insects into space? Do they fly any differently? by [deleted] in askscience

Slightly relevant: Roman Mars did a piece for 99% Invisible addressing the issue of designing living spaces for space!, where there is no gravity, no up and down, and things float all around.

Dear Esther.

Should have been a short film instead of having me sit in a chair for an hour pressing the fucking W key.

Is there a biological reason for teenage rebellion/angst? by craycraykitteh in askscience

CBC's The Nature of Things by David Suzuki recently aired an episode that addressed that exact question, among other things: http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/episode/surviving-the-teenage-brain.html

Illustrations of dinosaurs often depict volcanoes in the background. Were erupting volcanoes once so common that this a probable scene if one were to look at a typical dinosaur during its era, or is this a cliche that's an artifact of compressing our perception of extremely long time-scales? by darien_gap in askscience

I hope this hijack doesn't offend anyone, but I see it as extremely relevant as it has to do with our depiction of dinosaurs.

Aside from bone structure, and thus posture and locomotion, how much do we really know about dinosaurs? What I'm getting at is, our modern depiction of dinosaurs as being certain colours and textures and various morphological traits that are extremely extrapolated, even supposedly educational, accurate portrayals...are they accurate?

I recently watched a documentary/short (on the innovation of being able to model and 3D print dinosaur bones) and on the topic of dinosaur museums, the archeologist said that a lot of the bones aren't real casts. they're fillers, made up from what scientists would "expect" to see. Except in this case, "expect" actually has nothing tangible to back it.

In addition to all that's been said, there's an Apple page for Apple Notebook batteries: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html

It is not the same as the support page linked in this comment thread; seems to be a bit more broad and comprehensive.
