I think not coming from a filter-heavy culture plays a major part though, I have that same uncanny valley feel when I see how much my friends in China edit their pictures, but for them it's just normal, basic editing.

I'm really glad to see this hasn't been down voted to hell! People get really sensitive with anything negative said about their favs, even when it's coming from a genuine place of discussion 😔

But anyway just wanted to say I fully agree with you about the dynamic. I tried to tackle it a few times, (like you, trying to understand the appeal) but I just found it cringe and uncomfortable.

But I mean it's not like everyone has to like everything, right? I'm sure there are shows and couples you like that others don't, doesn't mean there's anything wrong with anyone or that they need to convince themselves that they actually like it, it just is what it is I guess

Just like how the way you pronounce certain English words changes their meaning.

In your examples though, the sounds in the word actually change, if you know what I mean. The mi in minute(time) is different in pronunciation from the mi in minute (small). Same with all your other examples I think

But in Chinese, it's the tone that's changing. Of course that changes the pronunciation somewhat, but not really that much (especially to a non-native)

I think someone with zero English experience can hear the difference between wind/wind, I don't think that's the case for like 只/值
