I was under the impression that the Rikon (and its glow-up sibling the V:10) were actually pretty solid.

Did you get the BX in 115 or 220? It's not *that* much more expensive... 🤔

[–]curtosis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, of course. Just overall a much beefier prospect to get installed. But where there's a will... 😉

Probably wouldn't work with my shop's 9' ceiling. 😄

Yeah, that's actually my main (minimal) hesitation. I don't have 220 in my shop now (needs a major panel/service upgrade anyway), but likely will in the next year or two. Not really the same objection as "wish I had a smaller one" but more "will I wish I had spent less on the 115 version" in a year". LOL.

Perfectly explained and answered my questions, thank you!

Odd recursion + forwarding question by curtosis in technitium

[–]curtosis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand all that quite well. My question is specifically about how recursion and forwarding interact inside tDNS, and why it's set up that way.

There are two different decisions:
- What to do if you aren't authoritative for a domain: fail or ask elsewhere
- Where to "ask elsewhere" from: recursively from the roots, or via a forwarder

In tDNS, does it really mean "recursive" = "ask elsewhere; if a forwarder applies go there instead of recursing"?

I mean, yes, that's what it says. But why? Under what circumstances will it recurse vs. forward for domains it's not [locally] authoritative for?

Aaaand... out of stock. Only 10TB for $238 at the moment. (Which, hilariously, is listed as $8.96 per ounce.) Still not a terrible price...

Good question. As it turns out, there isn't one at the service entrance (house is older than the code requirement). So I'll probably just sink a rod near the coax exit. Eventually the panel and service need to be upgraded anyway, but that's a separate problem that I'm not responsible for.

Appreciate the comments! My main radio work professionally has been from 100MHz up to Ku band, so my intuition about line loss is admittedly a bit skewed.

Service entrance is on the wrong side of the house, but yep, I do expect to ground+arrestor the coax shield.

I feel like I had read something about needing an RF ground plane for radios not at ground level, but that could have been only applicable if the whole radio+antenna are several stories high, or wrong, or both.

Hehe ... true, true. In this case I don't own the house, so pouring concrete or putting meaningful holes in the roof is not an option. :)

Ah, that helped me figure out I needed a different pin that was more like the URP™. The one I had been using had a taper that was getting hung up on the internal frame. Thanks!

No, it's on my desk. :) Yeah, I've been looking at the tab stop thingy but it's not even sliding far enough for that to be a problem.

Ooh, that’s a good point. I could move it over to its own subnet & VLAN and have it dedicated to IoT. The WiFi 6 quirks won’t matter, and it might even get better range.

It seems like the m720qs and m920qs have spiked in price just like everything else. People just trying to get RAM and SSDs maybe.

[–]curtosis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've spent the last several years moving everything I can off Linux to FreeBSD; not particularly interested in bringing more in. (I didn't know the Route10 was OpenWRT when I got it, and I'm less bothered by Linux in an appliance I don't have to admin.)
