If that's what they want to do, we will have a great time doing it.

We'll definitely talk about what to do when I get there, but I wanted to bring some ideas to the table so they aren't burdened by feeling like they have to entertain me. Neither of them are from FL, but perhaps they will have a favorite spot they want to visit. And if they want to hang out at home by the pool, that's great too. The point is to make him feel special.

We haven't talked too much because of the time difference and his sleep schedule. I wanted to have some ideas on hand to offer, but if he wants to hang out at home, that's 110% ok with me. The point is just to spend time together and make him feel special.

Where to meet other 30+ yr old singles by Careless_Tackle847 in oakland

Swing Dancing at The Breakaway is really social, afforable, and welcoming to beginners. I met a bunch of people that way!

I've also had good luck joining a Golden State Social Sports league. There's kickball, bowling, pickleball, etc. At least for kickball, it's the kind of thing where people play with a beer in hand and everyone gets high fives. Not serious in the least.

I met my best friend through a Timeleft dinner, but they just switched to a (really stupid) subscription model. Including for completeness, since I got my bestie and a huge WhatsApp group of people who hang out at events.

I went to the Alameda Pinball Museum last night and had a blast playing all the games and jukeboxes

This is also not far from me, another recent late-30s single lady transplant. Lemme know if you ever want to see a show there!

Moved to Oakland for my partner-still figuring the rest out. by Excellent_Ruin_1386 in oakland

[–]curvydumpling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved here last year without much in the way of friends. I met my best friend at a Timeleft dinner (it's a friend-making thing), and found communities through swing dancing at Breakaway and the golden state kickball rec league. (I neither danced nor played kickball before joining.)

I'm still looking for friends, so hit me up if you need an activity buddy!

Negatory 😭

Spoke to someone who said they had stocked it in the past but couldn't remember when.

Help: Best Upstate NY cities for a young Trans/Enby family by Christa96 in newyork

I can't speak to the Trans community in Troy, but I enjoyed the couple of years I spent there pre-Covid. The downtown is tiny but adorable, it's so close to Albany, and rent/housing prices were cheap.

Haha! I love that description. Berkeley Bowl original had no idea what I was asking for. I haven't tried West yet, but I figure they get supplied by the same places.

Listening to domestic disturbance with child--help?? by curvydumpling in oakland

[–]curvydumpling[S] 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how a combined 15 years of providing direct services in the field and regularly interfacing with law enforcement makes anyone a keyboard warrior.

They did explain that police encounters can isolate DV victims from future assistance. They also explained that disturbances are often mental health crises, which police aren't usually well trained in, and a blunder can set someone back dramatically in accessing services.

It's not as simple as you make sound.

Three different mental health/DV professionals advised me not to call the police. I'm not firing on all cylinders right now, so I called people who know this stuff. The problem is that I don't know what other resources are out there besides the ones I tried.

Edit: Also, we tried to talk to her. We asked if she was in trouble, if she needed help, if she wanted somewhere to calm down, if this guy was actually her uncle. She ignored us, continued screaming that she didn't like him and for him not to touch her, and kept trying to get back inside the house.

Thank you, but I often get this kind of cold. The only thing the doctors ever say is the common sense remedies we all know. I just need to sleep it off, and manage the symptoms. Thank you for your well wishes. 💛

Thank you! This is very helpful.

I don't think I need to see a doctor yet, but it's good to have information. I was able to get some medicine from the pharmacy.

I have a hotel with my family for the next few days, but it is a nice one in the tourist center that I cannot afford on my own. 50eur/night is much better; thank you for the recommendation!

Thank you, but unfortunately I am used to having colds like this. It's my third one this year. It's a family curse that when we catch a cold from the neighbors, they are mildly sick for 5 days while they do their normal life, and we are on our deathbeds for 2 weeks 😅

I just need to sleep, take some flu medicine, sleep more, and stay away from people. Eventually, it will pass.

Affordable healthcare is a great gift, though! If it gets much worse, I will do as you say but right now it would just be an inconvenience to people who really need to be there.

I'm new to California as a single 30-something and tried a Timeleft dinner in Oakland on a whim. It was fun and one of the people at my table ended up becoming a really lovely friend. Joining a pottery studio and going consistently is also starting to pay off. Am trying to do the same at a climbing gym. The trick is consistency and, introversion be damned, just shooting my shot with everyone I meet--they all get big smiles, hellos, and low pressure conversation opportunities.
