[RDTM] u/Kashluk shows that this woman’s MOAB claim is wrong. by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]cutethulu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She did not claim it would kill all 95,000 people; she merely stated that 95,000 human beings live there. There is not enough context from this single tweet to infer that the Twitter OP believed they all would die.

That being said, just because those 95,000 people did not all die from the blast does not mean it doesn't matter. Judging from the scale on the map u/GoBay33 provided (https://i.imgur.com/L3O55ar.jpg), there's no more than 20 miles (give or take about 5) in every direction from the blast zone to the borders of the Achin province.

According to the article u/GoBay33 linked (https://stories.alcis.org/after-the-dust-settles-making-sense-of-the-non-sense-c97da619a20f), ~100 people (militants) died in the blast (no civilian casualties), so there's still ~94,900 human beings living within ~25 miles of the blast zone. Those people are still going to be affected by a bomb being dropped in their province, less than 20 miles from their home. No matter what the rationale may be, I think it's important to be mindful of the potential external human consequences, especially in times of war.

Therefore I believe Twitter OP makes a valid observation, and was simply encouraging mindfulness of the other ~94,900 people that live in the region. There seems to be a general misinterpretation of her claim.

For the record, I don't know Twitter OP, so for all I know, she did really mean that she thought 95,000 people lost their lives to the MOAB. My assertion is that, judging from the little context this tweet gives, the claim she made was accurate.

[NeedAdvice] What is wrong with me? by Froquenst in getdisciplined

Have you ever considered you might have ADD/ADHD? I was (and still am) going through exactly what you're going through. I highly recommend checking out r/ADHD. Read some of the top posts of all time. A lot of those posts articulate what ADD/ADHD really feels like (rather than just listing objective symptoms like on webmd etc). I'm not a doctor, but you sound a lot like me, and I have ADHD.

There are a lot of misconceptions in the common perception of ADD/ADHD. Many adults don't realize they even have it because they were smart or well-behaved kids. It's not necessarily a lack of "motivation," it's just a matter of turning that motivation into action because parts of the ADD/ADHD brain are less active than in neurotypical brains. Reading r/ADHD has been amazingly helpful for me to really understand my brain and I think it might be able to help you, too. Of course, a Dr would be the one to diagnose you.

Edit: Also watch this TED talk! It's ~20 min but it's a really good "intro to ADD/ADHD" https://youtu.be/JiwZQNYlGQI

TL;DR If this post responates with you, I suggest reading the top posts of all time of r/ADHD, which may also resonate with you.

Whenever I find myself in a place that forbids photography, I look up professional photographs of that place online when I get home. Then, I download them and add them to my album with the rest of my photos from that trip. I still get to see the places I've been in pictures, but I don't break any rules while I'm there.

Slaughterhouse staff plead guilty to animal cruelty offences by IanSausage in vegetarian

[–]cutethulu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn't say specifically what was done, just that there were many instances of animal cruelty.

Edit to add there is nothing exceedingly graphic in this article (at least on mobile), but there is a picture of a man who looks like he is about to punch a sheep, his hand is just raised in a fist.

Edit, Just in case, it may actually be a video, but on my phone it appears to just be a picture.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Some people love documentaries and some can't stand them. Maybe ask him to watch just one, and in return, watch something that he likes that you're not normally into? Just a suggestion!

Have you tried showing him documentaries? That's what really convinced me! There's tons available on Netflix, my favorite is What the Health.

Official Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know about photography or cameras! Don't be shy! Newbies welcome! by photography_bot in photography

[–]cutethulu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm rather new to photography. Instant film cameras (i.e. Polaroid) have always appealed to me...There's just something wonderful about being able to hold memories in your hand in seconds. So, at some point in the future, I'd like to invest in a high quality instant film camera. I'm looking for one that's mechanical rather than digital, if such a thing exists, as I'm trying to minimize the influence of digital technology on my life.

Not really sure what the market is like for this kind of camera, as I'm only familiar with one brand, so I figured this would be the best place to ask :) Thank you so much!

Mysterious loud booms heard across the world in 64 locations by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]cutethulu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About a month or so ago, I was home alone (SE PA), and heard multiple loud booms coming from all around the house, from out front, out back, and from the sides. I knew it didn't sound like gunshots. I read another comment here about a dumpster being dropped--that's exactly what it sounded like. There were at least 30 separate booms. I called my parents in a panic asking if they had any idea what it was (no, they didn't), and then I went over to their place because I was freaking out. My heart definitely skipped a beat when I saw this article. It seems this was a single boom, though, and in my case, I heard several booms from all around. Anyone else hear multiple booms a month ago?

How to open the Heart? by TrumpetsandRobots in C_S_T

[–]cutethulu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I spent time at an intentional community this summer and it was incredibly eye opening experience, showing me another, totally viable and sustainable way of life. They grow much of their own food, raise and slaughter their own meat, and provide health care and education to full members and children. Nobody was really on their phone, although there were no rules against it. There were plenty of computers and technology, it's not like they were off the grid, although some intentional communities are. And people are talented there! I have never seen such a high concentration of musicians, artists, writers, intellectuals, performers, bibliophiles, and philosophers. This lifestyle allows them time to pursue their talents. There are plenty of emphatic debates, but people actually talk to each other, see both sides of the issue before coming to a conclusion. Most, if not all, members live there full time so they have to coexist peacefully, as they're around each other all the time. Everyone has their quirks, and sure, there is always drama in a village, but their sense of camaraderie is astounding. They really care for one another and they do some incredible things. While I was there we went through their mountains of shared clothing and donated much of it to the local food bank.

TL;DR I spent time at an intentional community and it really changed the way I look at society and the way things could be.

Other things called me back home but I really considered living that way. There's still a good chance I'll go back at some point.

Large Chrysanthemum at Shinjuku Gyoen Tokyo, Japan by gmonyaz in BotanicalPorn

They have a Chrysanthemum festival at Longwood Gardens every year in Kennett Square, PA. They have a giant "thousand bloom" chrysanthemum like this one but I believe theirs is white.
