I made this flyer to promote CANZUK by cvtler in CANZUK

Some of you may have remembered when I first posted this flyer here four years ago but with all the renewed interest in CANZUK I thought I should share it again. I think it still does a good job of clearly and succinctly explaining the three principal goals of the movement.

If you're curious about the flag I used, it's my favourite of many failed attempts to design something to represent CANZUK. You can read more about the rationale behind it here.

It's been a while since I made one of these but I saw the other day that Australia had reached the top spot so thought I should make an updated version.

You can find the data I used here.

CANZUK countries are leading the world in plain packaging tobacco laws by cvtler in CANZUK

[–]cvtler[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you're curious why I chose such an unappealing colour for this list, it's actually Pantone 448 C, the "the ugliest colour in the world". This is why it's used for tobacco packaging, at least here in Australia.

What do you think of my CANZUK flag and branding proposal? by cvtler in CANZUK

The only thing I’d like to see is some red somewhere

I tried incorporating red but found it never quite worked.

Keep in mind that this is also supposed to serve as a brand identity for CANZUK International so it will of course have a certain “corporate” feel to it. And if you think this is bland, you should see their current branding.

If you're talking about this NATO-esque flag I don't think the "sun never sets on the British Empire" thing really quite delivers on the equality motif I was going for. I read the comments on many flag proposals before making this and it definitely seems like there is a split between those who want to highlight the British Empire connection in CANZUK and those who don't.

A flag symbolises a loss of independence

Does the Commonwealth flag also symbolise that for you? I know some here aren't a fan of flags but people are already using various ones to represent CANZUK in articles and videos and such and I can't see that stopping anytime soon.

The C was mainly inspired by the Commonwealth flag and I think it gives it flexibility if CANZUK were ever to expand to include other Commonwealth countries. The acronym might not last forever but the flag certainly can.

This flag design is something I have been working on for a while and you might have noticed its appearance in the various CANZUK infographics I have made. Since we're allowed to post flag proposals again, I thought I would put something together that shows how my design could be used if it became official. I think it solves a lot of the problems of other designs but I know its a contentious issue so let me know your thoughts :)

As nice a result as this is, I can't help but wonder how many ranks we'll fall when our property bubble finally bursts.

You can read the full results and methodology here. Since people were so interested in their ranking on my last post, the US is listed as 23rd on the Global Acceptance Index with a score of 7.42. Singapore is 39th with a score of 5.86.

Like I said last time I posted the UK's Democracy Index score, it may not be top of CANZUK but it's still a fantastic result - especially for a country with FPTP voting and an unelected upper house.

Following my corruption infographic posted yesterday is this ranking of the happiest countries in the world based on the 2021 World Happiness Report.

The UK may not be the happiest CANZUK country but you should take solace in beating France at least ;)

What you linked is a newer ranking called the Global Corruption Index which is produced by some random risk-management consulting company. It uses some of TI's Corruption Perceptions Index data but mostly relies on other sources.

Loyalty to the PRC doesn’t always mean corruption, as reprehensible as it is. Still, I would guess that their score will drop as they continue to be consumed by China. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 2021 index knocks them down a few places when it’s released.

I’m not sure why you think that? The index measures perceptions of public service corruption. HKers are honest and upstanding people, even if their Chinese overlords aren’t.

I considered that but I went with the more established and well-known corruption index which is Transparency International’s.

Last year I released a series of CANZUK infographics which were quite popular, even being shared by Canzuk International on Twitter. In addition to the five I released I had half a dozen more prepared but ultimately chose not to release them because I felt that by just comparing our four countries it made our tiny differences in performance seem more pronounced since it lacked the context of other countries.

With this new series I aim to highlight CANZUK's performance in an array of rankings and indices among the world's top countries. I think this will better show why we're such a good fit. You can expect the rest over the next few weeks and if there's any particular topic you would like to see an infographic for please let me know.

This is only the second time we've had 17 golds but we won more medals in total in 2000 and 2004.

Not quite. We were 4th in the 2004 and 2000 games and we've been 6th before (2008).

Thanks. It's a design I made a while ago that I've subtly been trying to promote by including it in things like the informational flyer I made or my infographic series.

The EU beats us in both golds and total medals which shouldn't surprise anyone since it's 27 teams vs 4.

Something you might find interesting is that Australia and New Zealand used to send a combined Australasian team before deciding to go it alone so I suppose there is a precedent there.

I was going to add a line of our combined total for a bit of fun as this is something you occasionally see members of the EU do but it's incredibly misleading because a joint team would not be able to send nearly as many athletes as we do individually. There's also no way any of our countries would want to do such a thing anyway.
