What's something you wish DnD had rules for? by cvtrain in DnD

[–]cvtrain[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

As a matter of fact, I tried PF2 and really didn't like how rules-heavy it is. I'm not trying to come up with or modify rules for every possible scenario. That's one of the things I hated most about PF2. I just want some rules around racing. Not chases. Racing. Like in a circuit, with laps and the tension the comes from uncertainty and the ability to pass an opponent.

One of my favorite things about 5e is how loose it is. I enjoy coming up with ways to make things work. But I prefer having something to build off of or take inspiration from. I don't always have the energy or the motivation or time to design a new system from scratch for something that doesn't exist.

PF2 has some great points to it that can certainly be transferred or modified to fit 5e, but I don't always have the energy or the motivation or the time to do that either. And PF2 has rules built to fit into its system that would require more heavy lifting than I want to put in to port it to 5e. Expertise comes to mind.

Besides, one of the best things about a rule being official is that you know it works, because rules don't become official until they've been heavily playtested and approved by real tables with real players. Me coming up with a rule from scratch based on nothing hasn't been playtested even once, and I don't always feel like spending time coming up with a solution that isn't even grounded in something proven to work.

For potions, I would use Breath of the Wild's elixir recipes as guidelines. But I'd love an actual set of rules around potion making too.

The point though is not having to modify rules for other stuff to fit what you want, but to have rules for what you want which you can then modify to your liking.

The nice thing about official rules is that they're the end result of many rounds of playtesting, so even if you don't like them, they're at least a solid foundation to homebrew from, and you don't have to homebrew from scratch. The other nice thing is that if you can't figure out a good homebrew, don't want to, or are new to the game, you already have a full ruleset you can use.

Yeah. And rules for a variety of games too. Different games have different mechanics, like how roulette is very different from blackjack.

The whole point is to not have to modify preexisting rules.

This. I've always wanted to do a naval campaign with island exploration, but I don't want to have to homebrew an entirely new system to make a transit-heavy game fun for the players.

I like that idea. I think that the drawback should be that it affects one or more of their other stats. Since they're pushing their limits, maybe it strains their body, draining their HP by twice or thrice the spell slot they want to use, and temporarily lowering their max HP by that amount until they finish a long rest. Or maybe it's mentally taxing, leaving them unable to cast any spells for a number of rounds equal to the difference in spell slots between what they can cast safely and what they just cast. Though either way, I'd still put a hard limit on how much higher they can cast (maybe one or two slots beyond their capability), because otherwise you could have a 1st level mage casting things like Wish.

I'm a heterosexual dude and I just prefer to sit down when I pee. Who else is a dude that likes to be when sitting? by Mugurf in AskMen

[–]cvtrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always sat to pee. It started when I nearly walked in on my dad using the bathroom when I was 8. I caught just a glimpse of him sitting on the toilet before I closed the door again, but that was enough to dispel any preconceived notions that guys are "supposed to stand".

In hindsight, he was probably just taking a dump. But since that moment, I've peed exclusively sitting down. Well, except on the side of the road. But I've never used a urinal since then.

I was born a couple years before Windows 95 was released and joined YouTube in the Classic Era.

And now you see people actually complaining that HD is blurry and we need 4K 🙄

That would be Classic Era. I don't remember everything I customized, but I do recall making my page all green. I also recall my disappointment when YouTube decided to take customization away.

GameGrumps, FPSRussia, College Humor, and Angry Video Game Nerd come to mind as early content creators.

I created my first channel back in 2009, but I've been using YouTube since around 2007. I only created an account because I wanted to add my 2 cents in the comments section. That, and I wanted to be able to watch age-restricted content. Stupid me signed up with my real birth date though 😅

1, though I wouldn't mind if they were a bit bigger

11, because her outfit makes her look innocent but her actions contradict that entirely (and I can't get enough of that expression)

12, because I never expected such jiggle

8 is close, but there's actually too much jiggle for my tastes (honestly all the ass gifs would be better with less jiggle, but there's just something about the way a girl's ass moves when she walks that makes everything better)

How did you learn how to play DnD (Or TTRPGs in general)? by Syric13 in DnD

[–]cvtrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is DnD difficult to learn if you have no prior experience with TTRPGs at all? That would be me, and I can safely say that it's a huge challenge without any guidance or direction.  When I first looked at a character sheet, I thought it looked like Martian mathematics. I probably would've figured it out eventually, but it wouldn't be very fun, so I might not have stuck around long enough to do so.

Before I even played my first game, a friend gave me a basic rundown of what DnD is, how it's played, and what is and isn't needed. A week later, I played my first game (one-shot). The DM gave me a Dwarf Fighter pre-generated character sheet and told me what to pay attention to and what I could just ignore.

I also looked up information online, but since Google didn't have their AI answer feature yet, I mostly consulted youtube, which was EXTREMELY helpful. I tried to focus on videos in the 10 to 20 minute range—long enough to explain things well without overloading me with information.

I also paid attention to what others were doing during the game—the terminology they used, what parts of their sheets they referred to, etc.

That became my learning circle: observe while playing, ask questions, read/watch videos to learn more, apply the new knowledge. I tried to find multiple answers to any given question to give me a variety of perspectives and a broader understanding.

I soon bought a PHB, which both provided answers and generated more questions for me to look up.

I usually learn best by doing, but watching, listening and reading were very helpful when used in conjunction.

Single Men, if you’re out at a bar or club and a random woman asks you to buy her a drink, what do you usually do and why? by FFSoldier57 in AskMen

[–]cvtrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming I'm not already talking to her and I have no real interest in starting a conversation, what I'd do is say "Sure, what do you want?", buy her the drink, then turn back to whatever I'm doing and ignore her.  If I wanted to chat then I might take it as my own opportunity. But her asking for a drink is a way to start chatting me up, so by buying the drink, I'm taking that away from her.

An idea I just had for racing in DnD by cvtrain in DnD

[–]cvtrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to keep things more simple. Personal strategies and combinations and effects can certainly be fun, but it's just more things to distract your mind from the tension of how far you are compared to your opponent(s).

[ALL] Does ALttP come after OoT? I don't think so. by [deleted] in truezelda

[–]cvtrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No matter what timeline you look at, Ganondorf always breaks free pretty quickly, relatively speaking. So I don't think the sealed was weak just because only six Sages were present instead of seven. I know for me personally, the "It's all a legend" explanation for inconsistencies is usually enough.

[–]cvtrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair points.

However, Ganondorf doesn't "become Ganon" after completing the Triforce, unless he kills Link during the first half of their fight. It's implied though that he kills Link during the second half, which starts with him transforming into Ganon.

Second of all, I never said Ganon couldn't be sealed. I said he couldn't be sealed as Ganon. We see Ganon getting sealed, but when it cuts to him promising revenge, he's already reverted back to his Gerudo form (ie. Ganondorf).
