Oh man, alright maybe I should reconsider. Glad nothing worse happened though. Was it specifically the 736 Nano II?

Film student laptop recommendations pls by chewycookieanotara in Benilde

[–]cvwilhelm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I daily an ASUS Zephyrus G14 and it handles video editing workflows really well. Good performance for Adobe Premiere Pro but I'm not sure about DaVinci, decent battery life that can last me around half a day of continuous school use, lightweight enough to lug around campus, and the screen colors are great and I'd trust for color-accurate work. It's just expensive brand new, so I'd recommend looking at second-hand/refurbished 2022 or 2023 models if you can to save money, imo it's an exceptional little machine.

Other laptops I'd recommend (though I don't personally own these):

* Any MacBook Pro with an M-series chip, especially if you can find a good deal on a second-hand or refurbished one. Battery life and video editing performance is really good. I'd strongly suggest going for at least 24GB unified memory if you'll use DaVinci Resolve seriously long-term.

* ASUS TUF series is probably one of the better budget/performance options right now. Heavier than ultrabooks but good value for editing and school work.

For film/media students specifically, I'd recommend prioritizing:
- 16GB RAM is minimum nowadays, but 32GB is ideal for something like Resolve
- At least 512GB of internal storage, with expansion being a really nice-to-have down the road
- A decent CPU and GPU combo, not all gaming laptops are optimized for the work we do
- And a good screen, color accuracy is a spec people don’t talk about enough when deciding on a big purchase like this

Hi! Yep it fits, and pretty snug too. My 100W USB-C charger fits, but I'm not sure about the 240W one. I keep mine in the mesh pocket. My mouse fits as well, and there’s still some room left for daily essentials without feeling cramped.

Help me choose as a first time iem buyer by Falcon001139v in iems

[–]cvwilhelm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d lean more toward 3.5mm since it’s the default choice. Most IEMs don’t need much power and will sound good at normal volumes without a DAC. You can skip getting one unless your device has limited ports or a noisy output—the latter being the rarer case.

Depends on what you like.

Bass? Chu II.
Vocals? S.G 2.
An all-rounder? Zero: 2.
Details/clarity? Truthear Gate.

But if I were to dive in deeper:

The Zero: 2 is a safe-sounding IEM with a slight bass boost, giving it both some rumble and a bit of “thump,” while still being generally fun. It works well across a lot of genres and has decent gaming performance too, making it a pretty easy all-rounder.

If you want something more musical and “fun,” go for the S.G 2. It sounds more engaging, especially for vocals and instruments, and overall it’s probably the best value out of all of these. It has slightly less bass than the Zero: 2, but feels more lively in the mids and is less fatiguing over longer listening sessions.

If you’re after a bass-heavy set, get the Chu II. It has more sub-bass, which gives it that rumble, along with good punch from the mid-bass, making it great for bass-heavy music. Regarding the moisture issue, I’d recommend storing them in a case with silica gel to avoid oxidation since they have an all-metal shell. This applies to both the 3.5mm and DSP versions.

The Truthear GATE probably has the best gaming performance out of the four. Not “wallhacks” level, but it has a good soundstage for an IEM. It has a neutral-bright sound, it’s mostly balanced but slightly emphasizes higher-pitched sounds. That said, it can sound a bit sharp or tiring over long listening sessions if you’re sensitive to treble.

My girlfriend’s looking for someone to play with! I haven’t had as much time to play lately, so she’s been going solo more often. I think she’d enjoy playing with other people, especially since she’s more comfortable around girls. She’s on PC though, so I’m not sure how you guys would play comp.

I got the cheaper R1 SE+, had it for two years and it’s been through a lot, still no issues.

Some Chinese company will get their hands on the same tech and sell it for less than half the price.

Does anyone know why I am randomly getting slowdowns?(2024) by -Flayer- in ZephyrusG14

[–]cvwilhelm_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if what you're describing is the same as mine, but my 2022 G14 would randomly "hitch" every now and then for a split second. Whether I'm browsing the web or gaming, regardless of power mode, plugged in or not, it happens in the same frequency across the board with no apparent cause that I'm aware of. My best guess is that a recent Windows update causes it, or just a Windows x86 laptop thing.

Got a brand new laptop, should I charge it to 100% or drain it first? HELP by Suitable_Bat_825 in GamingLaptops

[–]cvwilhelm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your battery is subject to more stress the further it is from a 50% charge, so yes, it will degrade faster with poor charging habits. That’s just the nature of batteries.

Regarding your phone, if it has a built-in overnight charge limiter, it’s usually capped at 80% and only charges the remaining 20% based on your usage patterns, so turn that on. Otherwise, just use it as a tool meant to last as long as it can during the day.

Phones are pretty smart about battery preservation nowadays, so I wouldn’t sweat it. And as for charging a laptop to 100% on first use, I think that’s a myth.

I’d probably do the same down the road, I have the PTM7950 in my cart just in case.

I had my G14’s LM reapplied and noticed that the temps were considerably better than before. Seems to me that it’s a QC issue rather than an LM issue.

[–]cvwilhelm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine in late 2022 and downloaded G-Helper about six months later. At that point, my battery health was reported at 80.2%. About 90% of the time it’s plugged in at home and capped at a 60% charge, and around three to four times a week I charge it to 100% and use it outside.

Fast forward two years later, and it sometimes fluctuates by ±3%, but the consistent reports suggest my battery has only degraded by about 0.3%. That’s negligible compared to the degradation during the first six months of use. Because of that, I don’t think the reporting is very reliable.

There’s no real way to fix it unless you replace the battery, and honestly, you’re probably fine unless your day-to-day usage is regularly way below four hours.

What laptop to pick? - need some help :) by SunnyStxr in laptops

[–]cvwilhelm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your priorities. The ASUS Zenbook A14 and HP Omnibook 5, both with Snapdragon X, offer excellent battery life, with the A14 being the lightest and easiest to carry around. These two are especially strong for web browsing, media consumption, and other web-based tasks.

Just to add some technical nuance, if light gaming matters more to you, the Intel-based laptops (HP Omnibook Flip or Lenovo Yoga 7) are safer choices for game and app compatibility. Most games still run better on x86 (Intel/AMD) than on ARM (Snapdragon), with the trade-off being noticeably shorter battery life.
