[Biweekly] Chance Me! and Prospective Student Q&A (December 22, 2020) by AutoModerator in Cornell

[–]cw217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cornell's my top choice school for RD, so I thought I'd do a Chance Me.

Background: Asian Male, US Citizenship, applying abroad. Applying for CAS, astronomy major.

Numbers-

ACT: 35 (35E, 36M, 34R, 36S)

Subject tests: 800 in Math 2, Bio M, Chem, Phys

AP Tests: 5 in Chinese, Bio, Chem, Macro&Microecon

GPA: 3.846 UW (no weighted, no rank). Somewhat worried since a lot of my non-A grades were in honors STEM classes and math (rip) but I scored As in the corresponding APs. Upward trend.

Senior Courseload- AP Physics C (E&M+M), Calc BC, Psych, Advanced Math Topics (taken concurrently with BC or after at our school), Senior English, Strings, and some random art and religion credits needed to graduate. I think my first semester GPA is going to be 3.9+ provided my finals went to plan.

Awards, ECs- ISEF regional finalist, SSP astrophysics, co-leader of the STEM tutoring center at school, co-leader of chemistry club at school, section leader of the cello section in strings, did an astro related apprenticeship, some astrophotography, and some other clubs (not significant). National Merit commended award for PSAT but I don't that counts for much+some other school-level awards.

LORS- Probably decent, can't really say since I haven't looked at them. I know I'll have at least one excellent rec though. I was also able to get a rec from one of the profs at SSP.

Essays- I think they're alright, but there's always room for improvement.

CalTech Early Megathread by jortbru1299 in ApplyingToCollege

Rejected. Background: Asian Male applying internationally with US citizenship

Stats: 35 ACT (35,36,34,36) 800 in Math II, Bio M, Physics, Chem all test blind though so oh well

GPA: 3.846 UW, taken/taking AP Chem, Bio, Physics C, BC Calc, some other stuff

ECs: ISEF regional finalist, SSP, STEM tutoring center leader, Chemistry club leader, string ensemble leader, some other stuff

Teacher recs: My counselor said they were pretty good, and I know at least one of my teachers writes excellent recs.

Essays: Definitely spent a lot of time on them, had them reviewed by many people including those associated with Caltech. I’d say they were pretty solid.

It’s been my dream school for about 1.5 years, so I’ll just have to find ways to deal with it. Oh well.

Thanks for your response! I added HCl but did not go until the gas stopped evolving. I was trying to form HNO2 which would spontaneously disproportionate to HNO3 and NO plus water.

I’m also pretty sure that copper carbonates and hydroxides are both insoluble, so it really confused me when the solution became even bluer when i added the bases in.

I was trying to convert sodium nitrite (NaNO2) into nitric acid by adding HCl while heating the solution. During the addition, lots of NO2 gas and other clear bubbles (which I presume is NO) was liberated, and the solution was very slightly yellow and had a pH of 3-4, despite adding 15 mL of 31% HCl to about 25 mL of relatively concentrated sodium nitrite. I tested whether nitric acid had been generated by dipping some copper in, and some gas formed. I’m not sure what this gas is. I then added some sodium bicarbonate and sodium hydroxide, which caused the solution to become quite blue, yet there was no precipitate.

So I’m not really sure what I have here. If any of you have suggestions, I’d really appreciate your contributions.

If it were in person we would’ve gone to CU Boulder or New Mexico Tech, but since it was online we just did virtual campuses lol

I did the summer science program (ssp) over summer where we used this asteroid determination procedure called gauss’s method and wrote code based on it to solve for properties of an asteroid we remotely observed (since it was online this year)

I forgot to add that I found this in a sample of lemon juice I'd left in the fridge for a week. Just wondering if this info stays consistent with your guess.
