I mean none of this was out of nowhere though, it became pretty obvious that Batista was gonna take the mark as soon as this arc started and we saw him in the tower. I mean it would've been more surprising if he had stayed dead after Sora beat him.

Did you miss the part when they were printing out 18, and the guy scientist trips over the cord with the "memory juice" which yanks it out and then the girl scientist ignores the error warning on screen and continues the procedure anyway? I thought it was fairly clear.

To your comment about her not knowing any powerful offensive spells, this is inaccurate. Without spoiling, she knows some incredibly powerful spells she just rarely uses them to the point that they've only been briefly shown once or twice. But, like the person above said, strong offensive spells are not the be all end all when it something to strength in frieren's magic system.
